Description

PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER R. OLMS'IEAID, OF GIMARRON, NEW MEXICO.
STIRRUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Application filed Au ust 24, 1920. Serial No. 405,664.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVALTER R. OLMSTEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cimarron, in the county of Colfax and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of an adjustable stirrup, wherein the foot piece is adjustable with regard to the sides of the stirrup, and wherein the latter are formed to lie beneath the foot piece to afford the construction in its entirety a maxi- 'men strength and durability.
The nature and advantages of the inven tion will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a stirrup constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 ofFig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 indicates the foot piece of the stirrup,'11 the side members thereof, the latter being connected at their upper ends by means of a cross bar at 12 whlch accommodates the usual strap 13. The stirrup may vary in general configuration or outline. It is in this particular instance shown as having the foot piece slightly curved, while the terminals of the foot piece are split and formed to provide loops 1 1 which slidably receive the side members 11. The side members are provided with a plurality of openings 15 which are adapted to be singly brought into registration with the opening 16 of the loop,
and the alined openings accommodating a pin or other suitable locking elements 17 for holding the foot piece fixed relatively to the side members. The construction obviously provides for the adjustment of the stirrup. The side members 11 are also slightly curved so that the free terminals thereof conform to the curvature of the foot piece 10 lying beneath the latter and affording the stirrup proper strength and rigidity.
lVhile it is believed that from the. fore going description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to whendesired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A stirrup'including a foot piece and side members, a bar connecting said members at the top, said side members being adjustable with respect to the foot piece, said side members being designed to conform to the shape of the foot piece so that the free terminals thereof underlie the foot piece for the purpose specified, and means for holding said parts fixed relatively in a given position.
2. An adjustable stirrup comprising a foot piece, side members, said foot piece terminating in loops to slidably receive the side members, means for holding said foot piece and side members fixed relatively in a given vosition, said side member conforming to the shape of the foot piece so that the free terminals thereof underlie the foot piece for the purpose specified, and a bar connecting the upper ends of the side members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WALTER R. OLMSTEAD.
