SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,949, dated December 28, 1880.
Application filed July 26, 1880.
New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvementsin Harness-Saddles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of harnesssaddles which are hinged or jointed at or near the apex of the saddle; and it consists in certain details of construction, which will be fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a harness-saddle embracing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a topplan view of one of the metal tree-plates. Fig.3 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 4: is a plan View of the central loop-plate. Fig.5 is a bottom view of the bottom or lower loop.
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The metallic tree consists of five parts--viz.,
the two side plates,A, (shown detached in Figs.
2 and 3,) the central loop-plate, B, which is shown in Fig. 4., and the bottom'loops, O, (shown in Fig. 5.)
The side plates, A, are provided with upwardly-projecting flanges c e, to receive the straps E E, and at the upper end with short flanges e e, projecting downwardly, to inclose the doubled ends of the straps E E. A short stud, h, and dovetail or other shaped projection h are cast on the plates, near the lower end, to assist in holding the straps E E and 5 loop 0 in place. These plates have also suitable perforations for the passage of the fastenin g-screws, and may be perforated for tacking the housing to the pad, if desired. The top flanges do not extend to the end of the plate, 0 but only to a point near the stud h, thus forming a sort of recess or offset, into which the bottom loop, 0, fits, thus making a neat and compact finish for either a gig-saddle or a coach-pad.
The bottom loop, 0, is constructed with a transverse recess on its under side for the end of the strap, and also a second dovetail recess extending from the front recess to the end of the body of the loop. The last-mentioned rece'ss fits over the projection h on the plate E,
and prevents any lateral play. The loop 0 is (Model) provided with a ring or loop, (3, to which the thill-tug strap or belly-baud is secured. The loop is perforated for the passage of a screw, which is passed through all the parts of the saddle and held by a nutin the end of the pad, thus securing all the parts together at this point. The central plate, B, carries a checkbook of the usual form, and may be cast with the plate or formed separately and secured thereto. This plate is provided with side loops, 0 0, and the back-strap loop at. The pad D is also of the usual form, and contains nuts a a,
which are screw-tapped to receive the fastening-screws and terret-screws, which hold the parts of the saddle together, and it is covered by the housing F, which may be ornamented in any suitable manner. I provide the straps E E, one on each side of the saddle, which are adapted to lie between the flanges of the metal tree-pieces, and to be folded over the loops of the central plate, B, and doubled underneath between the short flanges c e on the under side of the tree-plates. This construction makes a perfectly flexible saddle, and prevents any bunching at the points where the straps are doubled.
I do not claim any novelty for the pad or housing; but my invention embraces the upper or top portion of the saddle, consisting of the side, central, and looped end plates and the strap by which the parts are secured together.
To assemble the parts of the saddle the pad, which has suitable tapped nuts secured within it, as before stated, is applied to the housing, which is perforated to coincide with the points where the nuts are located, and it may be united to the pad at the top, if desired, to hold it in place. One of the side plates and the central plate are then adjusted over the housing. The strap E has suitable holes or perforations in it, and, laid between the top flanges of the plate, the upper end is folded, the free end passed through the loop and doubled underneath between the short flanges on the underneath side of thetree-plate, and the parts are secured together by the terret-screws, and as many other auxiliary screws as may be necessary. By the construction above described I am enabled to make an extremely strong yet flexible saddle, that will adjust itself to the back of almost any animal, one that is easily and cheaply made and put together, and that can readily be taken apart when it becomes necessary to repair it or change the mountings.
Having thus fully and clearly described my invention, so that any person familiar with the art may make and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A harness-saddle tree consisting, essentially, of two metallic side plates having upwardly-projecting side flanges, and with short flanges underneath at the top, a central plate carrying the check-hook, two side loops, and the back-strap loop, and the recessed bottom loops, substantially as set forth.
2. In a harness-saddle, the combination of the metallic side plates provided with upwardly-projectin g side flanges, and with short flanges underneath, at the top, a central plate having a check-hook, side loops, and backstrap loop, the bottom loops, recessed on the under side, as described, and the leather side straps for connecting the parts of the tree together, substantially as set forth.
3. A harness-saddleconsisting of the pads D, housing F, and side pieces, A 'A, central piece, 13, loops 0 C, straps E E, and suitable terret-rings and connecting devices, construct- 40 ed and arranged substantially as and for'the purpose described.
