STUD-DRIVING WRENCH.
To all 11:71 am it may con cern lie it known that I, HENRY A. inen- HART; a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of Californim have invented new the same; Another object of the invention is to provide a stop member for securing the stud in the wrench and in conjunction therewith a quick release which permits removal of the wrench without back strain on the stud, thus leaving the studs firmly secured in position. Further objects will hereinafter appear.
"he invention consists of the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, partly broken away and partly in section.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a shank, the upper end of which is provided with a hand grip consisting of a rod 2. Formed on the lower end of the shank or otherwise secured thereto is a head member 3 in the lower end of which is formed a threaded opening 4 for the reception of a stud. Formed within the head and centrally disposed with relation to the threaded opening at is a chamber 5 in which slidably mounted a stop member 6. Also formed in the head member is a pair of camshaped or angularly disposed slots 7, one being positioned on each side. Secured in the stop member 6 is a pin 8 which projects through the slots 7 a sutiicient distance to permit the pins to be grasped and turned when the wrench is used. In actual operation, if it is desired to drive a stud securely into place it is accomplished by grasping theends of the pins 8 and turning the stop member 6 until the pins 8 engage the lower ends of the slots, as shown in Fig. 1, a slight flattened portion being formed in the lower. end of each slot. as at 11, to lock the stop member against turning movement when this position is assumed. The stud is then screwed into'the opening 4 until it: abuts against the stop member (3. The stud may then be s rewed and driven into place by means of the wrench and it is securely held during said operation as the stop member prevents turningniovement of the wrench with relation to the stud. The moment the stud has been tightly driven into place it will only be necessary to grasp the pins 8 and turn the stop member until the pins engage the upper ends of the slots 7. movement causes the stop member to move away from the end of the stud held by the wrench due to the fact that the slots are inclined or cam-shaped. The stud is thus released and it is therefore possible to unscrew the wrench without exerting any back strain on the stud. It is therefore firmly secured when driven into position and is in no way affected by the removal of the wrench.
The operation when placing the stud in the wrench is simple, as itis only necessary to turn. the stop member into its lowered position and then turn the stud in the threaded opening until it abuts or engages the stop. Similarly. when releasing or removing the wrench this is quickly accomplished as it is merely necessary to turn the stop member in the opposite direction and lift or move the stop member away from the stud, thus releasing the same and permitting the wrench to be unscrewed.
While the wrench as here described is employed in connection with stud screws, it is obvious that it is equally applicable in connection with pipe fittings for instance, when inserting'nipples or the like. I similarly This turning wish it understood that the materials and finish of the several parts comprising the wrench may be such as the experience'and judgment of the manufacturer. may dictate or various applications may demand; also that the proportions and specific design of the wrench may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described thy-invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1 i
1. A stud driving wrench of the character described, including a head with a detachslots having flattened portions formed at the upper side of their lower terminals adapted to seat said radial pins when the stud is bea ing driven.
2. A studdriving wrench of the character threaded stud engaging opening formed in the lower end of the head member, a chamber formed in the head member above the screw'threaded stud engaging opening, a
pair of inclined slots formed in opposite sides of the head member and communicating with the chamber, a stud driving stop member vertically and turnably movable in the chamber and having pins projecting radially through the slots in the head, said inclined slots having flattened portions i'ormed at the upper sidev of their lower terminals adapted to seat said radial pins when a stud is being driven.
3. In a tool of the character described comprisinga head member with a detachable turning shank threaded into its upper end, and having a screw threaded stud en-' gaging opening at its lower end, and an intermediate chamber with closed ended'inclined cam slots through opposite sides, a stop member loosely fitted within the chamber, means on said stop member playing in said slots for longitudinally adjusting said stop member, and 'means for securing said stop member when positioned in engagement with the stud.
