WRENCH.
Specification 9! Letters Ia,tent.
Pa ented J 1.1 29, v 913- Application filed August 3, 1912. Serial No. 713,182."
' To all whom'it may concern:
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a gravity operated pi e wrench 1n com,
bination with a separab e spring pressed plunger whereby the device may be changed into a spring actuated wrench.
With the aboveand other objects in View I have invented the wrench illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench having a. spring actuated means thereon, Fig. 21s a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an upper edge view thereof, Fig. 4 is an elevational. view showing the spring actuated member removed, Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a housing for a spring operated plunger, and Fig. 6 is an end elevational view thereof.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and ,in
the several views in the drawings in which 1 is a shank having an' integral jaw. 2 thereon, said jaw being slotted to provide a recess 3 therein to receive the neck 4 of the pivoted jaw 5, said jaw 5 being pivoted in said slot 3 by means of the bolt 6. The neck 6 is provided with an offset 7 having a channel 8 around said portion 7, said channel being adapted to receive the end 9 of a plunger 10 which is provided with a reduced portion 11 to receive the spring 12 which is seated in the enlarged bore 13 of the housing 14; Said bore isprovided with a reduced portion 15 which forms a shoulder 16 against which the end 17 of the spring 12 is adapted to seat. The other end 18 of said spring is adapted to abut the shoulder 19 formed by the enlarged por-j tion of the plunger 10 whereby said spring is adapted to normally force said plunger raised as'shown in Fig. 1 the end 9 of the plunger 10 seats upon the portion 20 and holds said jaw in a raised position as shown in-Fig. 1. v
The shank 1 is provided ,witha pair-of pins 2l'and 22 which are adapted to enter therecesses 23 and 24 of the housing 14 whereby bayonet joints are formed to hold said housing on to said shank. The spring.
pressed plunger engaging the-neck 4 of the jaw 5 holds the housing in place. When it is desired to. remove the housing from the all that is necessary to do is to grasp the same with the hand and fQI'Ce it slightly forward, so that the vertical portion 0 the slot 23 will come in line with the pin 21 when the housing may. readily be removed, said housing being provided with depending portions 25 and 26 which are adapted to straddle the shank of the wrench, the slots 23 and 24 being shown in the depending portion 26.
For certain work such for instance as where the wrench. is held above a pipe it is desired to grasp, it may be used altogether without the member 14, the weight of the jaw causing it to bear against the pipe until a grip is had thereon. However, when it becomes necessary to use the wrench from the under side of the pipe the wrench cannot be used without the member 14 to force the jaw 5 against the pipe. 7
Havingnow describedmy invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a pipe wrench having a fixed and a pivoted jaw and a shank, a separablespring actuated plunger member, adapted to actuate said pivoted jaw, a removable housing for said plunger member, a bayonet lock connection between said housing and shank, a heel on said pivoted jaw, against which said plunger is pressed to actuate the jaw and hold said housing against accidental removal from said shank. 2. A'pipe wrench consisting of a shank having a fixed jaw thereon, a pivoted jaw, a heel on said last jaw, a removable housing on said shank, a spring pressed lunger seated in said housing and adapted toengage said heel to hold said pivoted jaw in either an'opened or closed position.
3. A pipe wrench consisting of a shank having a fixed jaw thereon, a pivoted jaw, a heel on' said last jaw, a removable housing on saidshank, a spring pressed plunger housing havingopposing depending side wall slots in said walls and pins on said shank, the action of said plunger against said heel adapted to hold said iins'and slots interlocked.
4. In combination with a' pipe wrench having a shank with an integral jaw-and a pivoted jaw, a removable plunger seated outwardly of said shank and adapted to control said last jaw, a spring adaptedto actuate said plunger, a housing for said plunger and spring, said 'housing being re- ,movably secured to the outer walls of said shank, slots in said housing and pins 'on said shank whereby they are connected.
5. In combination with a pipe wrench having a shank with an integral jaw and a pivoted aw, a removable plunger seated outwvardly of said shank and adapted to con- 7 trol said last jaw, a spring adapted to actuate said plunger, a housing for said plunger and spring, said housing being removah] y secured to the outer walls of said shank, slots in said housing and pins on said shank whereby they are connected, said plunger adapted to press against said pivoted jaw and thereby hold said housing against accidental removal from said shank.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
