METAL TIE.
specification of Letters Patent. I
' Patented July 12, 1921.
Application filed April 18, 1919. Serial No. 291,052.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, NATHANIEL 0. GOLD- SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norwood, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Ties, of which the following is a full, clear,-
and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to metal ties for car rails inwhich the rails are fastened in place by clips secured to the tie and engaging the base of the rail. "Heretofore in such constructions it has been necessary to set the rails in place on the tiesand then to secure the clips to the ties by riveting or otherwise.
It is the object. of my invention to provide a construction in which the clips can be secured to the tie before the rails are set in position, and this object is accompllshed by that certain construction and arrangement to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed, in which the clips are pivotally secured in place so that the ties can be furnished completely equipped, and when the rails are set the clips can then be driven into position with a hammer to tightly and firmly wedge the rail in position without the liability of the clips becoming loose.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my tie showing the rails in section.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same showing the pivoted wedges open at one side and closed at the other, and the ball of the rails broken away,
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the pivoted Wedges.
The rails shown in the drawings have the balls 1, the webs 2 and the flanged bases 3. The tie; itself is shown in this embodiment as being formed from a U shaped barof-steel l, with its ends bent back on itself, at 5, to fit over the outside flanges of the bases of the rails. As so constructed the rails are set with their bases on the steel tie and their outside flanges inserted under the turned are pivotally tie by means The attach the rails are set in ment to the rail is preferably very tight permitting, however, that the wedges be driven over the inner flanges of rail bases.
The wedges have raised ends 8 which at their inner ends on the under side terminate 1n a slightly rounded or cam shoulder 9. The raised ends are also so formed as to taper from the edge nearest the rail when they are open, to the edge farthest from the rail, this farther edge being considerably thicker than the inner edge.
The result of this structure is that when place as above noted, the wedges may be driven over the inner flanges thereof, by means of a sledge, with the curved shoulder forcing the rails well un der the outer'ends 5 and the thicker edges of the wedges forcing the rails solidly against structure are obvious and possess advantages over the prior art that has come to my knowledge as heretofore stated. I do not desire to be limited in the construction of my claims that follow'due to the failure to mention equivalent structures to the various parts detailed, since I desire that all obvious mechanical equivalen be included within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Ina metal tie, the combination with a rail supporting member having means at its end for engaging the outer flange of a rail base, and a clamping member pivotally mounted on the supporting member and having a shoulder formed on a cam curve to abut tightly against the edge of a rail flange upon driving of the member into place, and a terminal piece shaped to overlie the inner rail base flange and likewise cam-curved at the end, said terminal piece being thickened at the portion thereof located away from the rail when the clamping member is open.
NATHANIEL 0. GOLDSMITH.
