STUMP-PULLING MECHANISM.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVELI KAAnLo ARMAS PALOHEIMO, a citizen of the Republic of Finland, residing at Kidaelsgatan 3, Helsingfors, Finland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump Pulling Mechanism, for which I have filed an application in Germany on Feb. 1, 1919, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stump pulling machines and more particularly to a machine in which a crane is utilized to uproot the stumps.
Primarily, I aim to provide a simple and compact apparatus which will efficiently perform its designed functions and in which portions of the stump pulling mechanism a are utilized as means for transporting the apparatus when it is in non-operative pos1- tion.
My invention further comprises an arrangement for conveniently rendering the portions of the hoisting apparatus which are used for the transportation of the device, operative to serve as either rolling elements or as stump pulling mechanism, as desired.
The drawings accompanying this specification and forming part thereof show one embodiment of my invention.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my apparatus in position for transportation;
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of my apparatus in position for pulling a tree stump; and
Fig. 3 shows an end elevation of the apparatus as shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings a crane indicated in 1ts entirety by 1 preferably consists of a pair of diverging planks connected at the1r upper ends by suitable tie-bolts and at their lower ends by suitable spreader boards 2. The spreader boards together with the planks of the crane provide a su1table receptacle for containing tools and the llke. A laterally shiftable axle 3 is provided at the lower end of the crane and has a pair of fly wheels 4 preferably disposed on each end thereof. A cross pin 5 transversely passes through the planks at the upper end of the crane and is adapted to be utilized for attaching one end of the requisite block and tackle for lifting the crane during the stump pulling operation. A block and tackle consisting of the two blocks 6 and 7 has one of these blocks, namely the block 6 attached Specification of Letters Patent.

to the crosspin 5. The other block 7 is secured to any convenient immovable object such as a tree by a tie-rope 8. A spring 9 of the usual construction is secured to a convenient cross piece attached to the crane and serves as a locking ratchet for a windlass to be described. A pair of detachable crank handles 10 are normally attached to the ends of shaft 3 and serve as manipulating members to rotate it. A rope or chain 11 or any other suitable connecting means has one end attached to an eye-bolt provided at the upper end of the crane and its other end provided with a hook 12 adapted to engage a rope or chain passing around the stump. A fender 13 is attached to the upper end of the crane and serves to prevent contact of the crane pieces with the ground and obvlate consequent wear of the crane planks when the apparatus is in position for transportation. Near the lower end of the crane and between the side pieces thereof, there is provided a windlass 1410f the usual construction preferably located above the axle 3 and in normal stump pulling position, connected therewith by means of gears and providing the usual mechanical power advantage to the windlass. By laterally shifting the axle 3, its gear may be disengaged from the windlass gear. One end of the tackle rope 15 which passes around the blocks 6 and 7 passes around this windlass and serves to cause the blocks 6 and 7 to approach when the drum of the windlass let is rotated. A bearing post 16 projects outwardly from the crane and has its outer end connected to the frame by a suitable bracing strut. The end of this hearing post is adapted to abut against the tree stump to be uprooted and thus prevent movement of the bottom of the crane relatively to the ground.
When transporting my apparatus it is placed in the position shown in Fig. 1 and is moved from place to place on the wheels 1, which as above indicated serve as fly wheels when the apparatus is used to pull stumps. When it is desired to uproot a stump the apparatus is tilted into the position shown in Fig. 2, with the end of the member 16 abuting against the tree stump, and the rope 11 attached to the stump, the connecting rope 8 is then attached to any convenient immovable object such as a tree, the axle 3 shifted to such position that its gear engages the gear of the windlass and the handles 10 are manually rotated thereby causing the combination of a-beam, one end of the end of the rope 15 attached to the windlass drum 14: toroll' up. on it and to cause the blocks 6 and 7 to, approach. As the blocks 6 and 7 approach,-the end'oft-he crane 1 is rotated in a counter-clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 2 until suflicient' force is exerted on the rope 11 to draw the stump out of the ground.
