TOY.
Specification ofLetters Patent. Patented July 5, 1921.
Application filed August 25, 1920. Serial No. 405,903.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FOWLER, a citizen of the, United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Toy, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a toy, and has for its object to provide a flying toy so con derstand how to make and use the same, I
will describe its construction in detail, re-
' ferring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure l, is a plan view of my improved to Fig. 2, is a side elevation of Fig. 1, portions thereof being broken away and sec tioned to clearly illustrate the construction of the device.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 1 represents a handle in which is secured one end of a stem 2, said stem having an extended reduced portion 3 leaving a head 5 upon the free end of the stem. The end of this head is rounded into semi-spherical shape for the purpose hereinafter set forth. I
6 represents the flying member of the device which is here shown as consisting of three propeller blades, but which may utilize a lesser or greater number of said blades, and to this flying member is secured the sleeves 7, said securement being preferably by soldering or brazing, the intent being to construct the flying member with as little weight as possible.
In manipulating the toy a cord is wound around the sleeve after which the latter is placed upon the stem 2 when by vigorously pulling upon the cord the flying member is caused to revolve at a high rate of speed so that the propeller blades thereof actingupon the air will cause said member to rise ofl of the steamand soar through the air to a considerable height. After the rotary momentum of the flying member has been exhausted to a polnt where said member ceases to "fly upward it will then sail or volplane downward, the sleeve serving to hold the propellers at the proper point against upsetting.
As shown inFig. 2, the reduced portion 3 of the stem is nearly equal in length to the sleeve so as to leave a bearing upon the inner walls of said sleeve'only near the top and bottom thereof, thus greatly reducing the skin friction which would otherwise be inlength of the latter; also the rounding of the end-of the head 5 will lessen the point of contact between said head and the flying member thereby reducing the friction at this point, and I have found in practice that this construction greatly facilitates the manipulation of the toy; 5
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thu fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a toy of the character described, a flying fmember, propeller blades formed with said member, a sleeve carried by the flying member, a stem having a' reduced section therein, a rounded head carried by the outer end of said reduced section, said head and reduced section adapted to pass within the sleeve, said head having bearing contact with both the sleeve and the flying member and a handle to whichthe stem is secured.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature.
FRAN K FOWLER.
