There are at present a'nuinber of different kinds or styles of miners lamps being manufactured and which are in: use, each kind or style being provided with means peculiar to itself for engagement with the lamp-supporting attachment upon miners caps,

which necessitates each attachment being provided with special means adapting it for use in connection with one particuliar kind or style of lamp. Heretofore it has been the practice universally to provide lamp-supporting attachments adapted only for one kind or style of lamp. When such lampsupporting attachment has been'or is attached to a cap, only a lamp provided with an attaching means adapted to that particular kind of lamp-supporting attachment could or can be engaged with said supporting attachment. I

7 Such practice of constructing different kinds or types of lamp-supporting attachments each type or kind being adapted only for use in connection with a'lamp provided with a particular kind of attaching means corresponding thereto, is expensive and wasteful of material time and labor required in the manufacture of the same.

My inventionghas for its object broadly to obviate this wasteful practice by providing a lamp-supporting attachment having means whereby any known lamp having any of the known means for attachingit to a lamp-supporting attachment may be attached thereto and supported thereon and thereby.

More specifically stated, my invention has for its object to provide a single lamp-supporting attachment for miners eaps pro-.

vided with a plurality ofhdifferent means, each adapted for engagement with the attaching means upon the different kinds oflamps now manufactured and in use.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will be specifically referred to and pointed out in the detailed description thereof which follows orwill be apparent from such description.

This opening extends at right angles to the slot 1 previously referred to and is formed by cutting notches in the horizontal br1dge portion 6 of the attachment upon opposite sides of the said slot 1st, as is clearly shown in 1 of the drawings.

It may be that instead of having a plurality of attaching means such as 16 shown in Fig. 2, the lamp may have a single,'relatively wide attaching means. In such case, a corresponding attaching means should be provided upon the lamp-supporting attachmerit. Such means is shown at 21 in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

A; though not illustrated, such lamps are constructeo; that is,1amps having a single relatively wide attaching means.

It will be seen that l have provided a single lamp-supporting attachment for miners caps which is capable of supporting four different kinds or types of lamps; that is, lamps having four different kinds otmeansby which the same'may be attached or secured to and supported upon the lamp-supporting attachment, thereby rendering unnecessary the manufacture of tour ditierent kinds of lamp supporting attachments for supporting the four different kinds or-types of lamps. In this way a great saving of material is effected as well as great economy in the cost of material and manufacture.

It will be'understood that the different openings as shown and described may be formed while the strip of which the attachment is constructed is in a flat or un formed state and that after the said openings shall have been cut through the said strip, the latter may be formed into the shape as shown in Fig. 1.

In connection withthe staple-like holding means 21 which in fact forms a socket for the reception of the relatively wide, fiat attaching means 7 provided upon cez tain forms of lamps, it may be noted that when the openings 13, 14:, etc. are cut into a flat blank as above described, the material of said blank is slit upon opposite sides of the portion 21, ai'te which the portion 21, intermediate the said. slits is bent or projected outwardly to form the socketlike opening previously referred to.

1. A lamp-supporting attachment for miners caps provided with a plurality of separate and independent means for separately and independently supporting a plurality of kinds of lamps each having a different kind of means for securing the same to the said lampsupporting attachment.

2. As an article of manufacture, a lampsupporting attachment for miners caps consisting of a strip of suitable material having a central portion which, when the attachment is secured to a cap, extends in {general parallel relation to the body of the same and the upper end of which terminates in a rearwardly extending portion, a portion extending a short distance downwardly from the rear end of the latter portion, and a portion extending rearwardly from the lower end of the said downwardly extending portion, the second mentioned rearwardly extending portion having an opening for the reception of a hook for supporting a miners lamp and a slot in said strip in front of said opening and in alinement therewith and a plurality of openings in the first named rearwardly extending portion of said strip adapted to receive supporting prongsattached to a lamp, substantially as described I 3. the said strip also having a relatively nar-- row portion extending transversely thereof provided by a couple of slits cut in parallel relation to each other, the said portion being pressed outwardly to form a socket for the reception of a relatively wide supporting projection upon a lamp.

4. As an article of manufacture, a lampsupporting attachment for miners caps comprising a strip of suitable material adapted to be secured to the front portion of" a cap, the upper portion of said strip intermediate its ends being bent to form a U-shaped portion and the said strip having a portion which extends rearwardly from the rear part of said U-shaped portion and which is adapted to be connected with the top portion of the cap, the said rearwardly extending portion being provided with an opening for the reception of a hook attached to a lamp and the said strip having a slot cut through the said U-shaped portion and extending longitudinally of the said strip and being in alinement with the said opening, and a plurality of openings formed in the connecting part of the said U-shaped portion adapted to reside of the cap when the said attachment is.

said strip having slits formed in the central portion thereof, the strip of material between the said slits being projected outwardly to form a socket for the reception of a correspondingly shaped shank having connec tion with a lamp.
