WATER-TUBE STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1921.
Application filed December 7, 1.918. Serial No. 265,781.
To all flo/ioni t may concern:
Be it lrnown that l, ROBERT BAYLns ARM- s'rnoNo, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Newcastleupon-Tyne, in the county of Northumberland, England, have invented Improvements in Tater-Tube Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to water tube boilers of the type comprising upper and lower vessels connected by generating tubes.
It has been proposed to provide such boilers with steam drums subdivided by partitions and with superheating tubes which connect the several compartments thereof to a water drum, the connections of the steam and water drums being such that` when superheating is desired, the steam can pass from a compartment of the steam drum, through the superheating tubes to another compartment of the drum and thence to the steam outlet and that at other times water can be admitted to the superheating tubes. It has also been proposed to provide the steam drum of a superheater with a partition which subdivides it into longitudinal steam inlet and superheated steam outlet compartments that are connected by depending U shaped superheating tubes and to hinge the upper part of the partition so that it can be turned down into proximity to the lower part so that by flooding the tubes by raising the water level in the boiler the said tubes can be converted into generating tubes.
Now according to the present invention, subdivided steam drums are provided with valved connections whereby the steam spaces of the compartments can be placed in direct communication and water admitted to the` supcrheating tubes by which arrangement all the suporheating tubes can be made to serve as generating tubes and the saturated steam generated passed from all the compartments to the ordinary steam outlet. The steam drums preferably are divided into longitudinal compartments so that there is a downward flow of steam in some of the superheater tubes throughout the full length of the bank and upward flow in the remainder.
Boilers of the type comprising two lower water drums with furnace between them and two upper steam and water drums parallel thereto but nearer together and connected by steam pipes to a common steam drum between them, and having each lower drum connected to the opposite upper drum by transverse rows of inclined generating tubes crossing beneath the steam drum above the center of the furnace, may have the common steam drum divided into longitudinal compartments which are connected by superheating tubesv which lie over the one set of generating tubes and cross the other set.
.Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in transverse section, with parts in elevation one construction of boiler embodying the invention;
F ig. 2 is, as to the left hand half, a section on the line 2--2 Fig. 1 and, as to the right hand half, an elevation with the casings removed.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing one way of interconnecting the valve le and the valves m by chains passing around sprocket wheels fixed to the several valve spindles so that all must turn together in the saine direction.
In this construction, there are two lower water drums a with furnace between them and two upper steam and water drums o parallel thereto but nearer together and connected by steam pipes c to a common steam drum (Zibetween them, each lower drum a being connected to the opposite upper drum b by transverse rows of inclined generating tubes e crossing beneath the steam drum above the center of the furnace, the rows being alternately inclined in opposite directions; above each lower water drum a is a smaller drum 7" with transverse rows of inclined superheating tubes g extending therefrom to the lower side of the steam drum d, these tubes in the example lying over the one set of transverse rows of tubes and crossing the other set. The steam drum is divided by two or more longitudinal partitions 7L preferably bulged slightly inward into three or more compartments, each partition being arranged to cut off the upper ends of some of Ythe corresponding set of superheating tubes g from the others and to out off the steam pipe connection c with the corresponding steam and water drum b from the middle compartment, which may be provided with a steam outlet, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8; the two steam pipe connections c are provided with a bypass connection i to the front olf the middle compartment of the steam drum, said bypass connection being' fitted with a stop valve or valves. The small drums 7 at the lower ends of the superheating tubes are respectively connected by pipes Z at the trent ends to the water drums u beneath them through stop valves m. Upon portions of each set of generating and superheating tubes are battles u, or the like; the baffles may be arranged in various ways according to the course the gases are to be caused to follow; in the example'the bailles are arranged to close the alternate spacesv between the pper tier oi tubes at their lower parts so as to check the l'lowoir gases and direct them through the remaining spaces. o are water tubes arranged to form a wall and serving as downcomcr tubes.
llllien raising the steam the stop valves 7cV and m are open and the superheating tubes g then act as additional generating tubes; when it is desired to superheat the steam the stop valves ZC and m are closed, saturated steam then passing 'from each outer compartment o1C the steam drum through those ot the superheating tubes g in communication with it and returning from the small drum below through the remainder of that set of superheating tubes to the middle compartment of the steam drum.
All the stop valves are or may be interconnected so as to be opened and closed together. V
Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating one way of interconnecting the valve 7c and the valves m by a chain passing around sprocket wheels fixed te the several valve spindles so tl at all must turn together in the ame direction.
fis will be understood the construction ot boiler just described is an example onlyA oli' drums, fixed longitudinal partitions 'dividing Said upper drum into three compartments, banks ol' tubes connecting each of said lower drums with the upper drum, some ot each bank of tubes connecting at their upper ends with an outer compartment and some with the middle compartment, a steam inlet connection to each outer compartment, a steam outlet from the middle compartment, a water inlet to each lower drum, a bypass connection between the compartments of the upper drum, and valves controlling said by-pass connection and said water inlets, substantially as described.
2. A. water tube steam boiler comprising two lower waterdrums Vwith furnace between them, two upper steam and water drums parallel thereto but nearer together, a common steam Vdrum between the twosteam and water drums, and steam pipes connecting the common steam drums with the two steam and water drums, each lower drum being connected to the opposite upper drum by transverse rows of in/:lined generating tubes crossing beneath the steam drum abovethe center of the furnace, longitudinal partitions dividing the steam drum into three compartments, superheating tubes connecting said compartments which tubes lie over one set of generating tubes and cross the other set, and valved connections between said compartments and a valved water inlet connected to said tubes, substantially as described.
3. ln a water tube steam boiler, a superheater comprising a steam drum subdivided into compartments, superheating tubes connecting said compartments, an external pipe connection between said compartments, a water inlet pipe to said tubes, and interconnectedV valves' respectivelyv controlling the said external connecting pipe and said water inlet pipe, substantially as described. l
