PHILIP H. REIOHHARDT AND MORRISS SGHNAPP, OF BRUNSIVIGK, MO.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,345, dated April 29, 1873 application filed March 22, 187 3.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PHILIP H. Enron- HARD'J. and MORRISS ScHNAPP, of Brunswick, in the county of Ghariton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Fanning-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
We employ a chronometer mechanism for driving one or more swinging fans for generating air-currents, driving away insects and the like in warm weather, using a pendulum instead of the hair-spring for regulating the motion, and attaching a swinging arm to the shaft, which works the pendulum for obtainin g the vibratory motion for the fans.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of ourimproved fanning-machine, and Fig. 2 is an elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1.

A and B represent the two trains of the chronometer mechanisms, which impart oscillatory motion to the shaft 0, to which-we con nect a powerful pendulum, E, by the arm D, for regulating the motion, and to the other end we attach another arm, F, for working the fans G, which may consist of any number of plane blades suspended by rods H from overhead shafts I, the said fans or other sus pending rods being connected together by connecting-rods K, so that any number suspended at suitable distances apart over a table or bed may be caused to vibrate slowly throughout any required distance, so as to maintain a lively circulation of air. may have a range of movement equal to that of the pendulum, if preferred; but probably it .will be better for the pendulum to have the greatest range if many fans are used.
A good arrangement will be had with. three fanshafts, I, and three rows of fans, the arm F being connected to one of the fans of the middle row, and the othertwo rows connected to the middle one by the rods K.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The arrangement, with the trains A and B, of chronometer mechanism, of the pendulum E, arms -D F, and a series of fans, G, with suspending and connecting devices, substantially as specified.
