COMBINATION PADLOCK.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.2. 1920.

A TT RNE V8 dUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
COMBINATION-rumen.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1921.
Application led August 2, V1920. Serial No. 400,724.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM S. McADoo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination- Padlocks7 of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in padlocks which may be opened by setting particular combinations, and it consists in the constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
Combination padlocks have been used in which number wheels may be set to effect the opening of the lock, but in most instances,
'these number wheels are exposed in such position that a blow from a heavy instrument, such as a hammer, wrench, etc., onthe number wheels will put them out of commission.
Certain locks of this type have parts which project from the barrel which maylafford a means of attachment for a pipe wrench or other tool, so that the parts may pe lsometimes twisted off, thus ruining the oc r.
In other instances, there are openings in the lock which will permit a tool to enter which can be easily put out of commission by driving the tool in.
An object of the present invention is to provide a padlock having a shackle which is held positively by a removable pin and which is provided with character bearing wheels or rings that are countersunk, so as to prevent the injury to the wheels by a blow from a hammer or the like.
A further object is to provide a lock of the type described, in which there are no projecting parts or openings that may permit the use of tools to put the lock out 0f commission.
Atfurther obj ectl of my invention is to provide a lock in which the wheels or rings bearing characters are spaced apart so that the manipulation of one ring will not disturb the setting of another ring.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which there is no danger of disturbing the relative arrangement of therings when the device is unlocked, as, for instance, by droppingfit on the ground.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device having a protective casing which forms a reinforcement of the barrel or body portion and a covering for the character bearing wheels orrings, said casing being easily removed when the device is unlocked, and being securely held in position when the device is locked.
A further object of myinvention is to provide a slidable guard or shield so as to prevent water from getting into the interior of the lock, said shield being shiftable to permit ready access to the `character `bearing rings so as to permit the shifting of the latter and the setting of the proper combinations to unlock the device.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification., and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure l is a side view of the lock in closed position,
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof,
v F ig, 3 is a central longitudinal section,
Fig. 4 is a section along the line 4-*4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a side view of the pin or keeper.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a barrel orbody portion l which is substantially cylindricall in shape and which has an extension lx, as shown in thedrawings. The body portion l is provided with a central cylindrical bore 2 extending from end to end. Transversely extending slots 3 are provided in the body portion or barrel l, these slots being spaced equally distant and extending well into the extension 1x, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. There is also a longitudinal slot 4 contiguous to and running parallel with the central bore 2. This slot terminates, however, short of one end, as will be seen in Fig. 3. Disposed in the central bore is a bushing 5 which has a closed end 6 and which is provided with a longitudinal slot 7. The closed end 6 has its outer surface flush with the end of the body portion 6, and the slot 7 is in registration with the slot 4 in the body por-` tion or barrel. Disposed in each of the slots is a ring or wheel 8 bearing characters, such as letters or figures, on the periphery thereof (see Fig. l). Each ring is provided with a series of transverse notches 10 for a purpose casing is substantially cylindrical, but it has a slot arranged to receive the extension 1X of the body portion, and it may be slipped over the body portion in the manner shown in the drawings. A casev lhardenedshackle 12 is provided, the endsf12a of the shackle being preferably reduced Vand flattened, so as to enter alined openingsiin the casing, the body portion, and the bushing. The ends 12a are provided with openings 13 arranged to receive apin or keeper 14 of the shape shown in Fig; 5. rllhe latter is provided with a head 14a arranged to'enter a recessedporti'on of the barrel 1. The pin 14 is provided with a key or feather 15 adapted to lenter the alined slots 7 and 4, and, also to enter slots 16 in each of thewheels or rings 8 when the latter are inposition, so that the slots 16 are in alinement. The key 15 is 'provided with slots 17 arranged to receive the rings 8. As will be seen from Fig. 4, the casing 11` is provided 'with a slot v18, through which the rings or wheels may be viewed.V /At the edge .of the slot is a plate 19 which is countersunk in the casing, and is secured thereto, and is prov ided with inwardly extending4 fingers 20 which areV arranged to engage in the slots 10 in the rings.
An exterior guard or shield 21 is provided,
this shieldbeing curved tojconform with the curvature of the casing 11, a portion of the shield being struck up to provide a handle 22,v thereby leaving a slot 23 which may be brought into registrationwith the slot 18. Between the adjacent wheels or rings is aV spiral spring 24 which exerts friction on the ring so as to prevent undue movement, as will be explained later.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. 1n assembling the device, the ring at'the leftof Fig. 3 is first placed in its slot and then thespring 24 is pushed intoposition through an'open` ing or passage 25 extending inwardly from one end; The remaining rings and springs are` placed successively, and the end of the passage 25 is closed by a pin or bar 26. The bushing 5 is then placed in position and the casing 11 Vis slipped on, so that the` openings inthe bushing, the. casing, and the barrel are in registration to receive the ends 12,l of the shackle.
Y c, When it is desired Vto use the lock, the
" shackle is slipped through they eye or staple which is designed to be locked, and its ends are passed into the alined openings, and then the pin 14 is kplaced in position, the slots 16 kof the rings'8 being previously placed in alinement. Any of the rings may now be turned, fpreferably by inserting a pointed ltool in the alined slots 23 and 18 (see Fig. 4),
The clicks 20, however, have another function, because they enableone to open the lock in the dark. `All that is necessary is to re-V memberhow many` notches the wheels have been turned Yout of alinement, and to turn them either' backwardly or forwardly the necessary distance, counting the clicks. Thus without seeing the Vcharactersthe'lock mayV be opened by `one who knows how far the wheels have been previously turned.
The guard 21 maybe moved so as to com-k only below the surface ofthe reinforcing casing, but the are countersunk below the barrel itself. t is not easy, therefore, to put the lock outv of commission by a blow from a hammer, since the hammer cannot reach'the rings. In certaindevices. of the type, it is com aratively easyptoshear off the pivot pin o theshackle, but in the present instance, there is no pivot pin, and since the shackley and the reinforcing casing*` are case hardened, it isa very diiicult matter to put the lock-out of commission. Itwill also be observed that there are no screw bolts or rivets in the construction of the lock.
1f for any reason it is desired to change the combination, it may be done very 'easily byunlocking thev device and removing the reinforcingcasing and the` bushing fand in terchanging the rings. 1f it should 'happen that moisture should collect inthe interior,
it will drain out through the small passages 27 which lead to the extension 1x, thus keeping the lock comparatively dry.
I claim:
