UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOW AND NECKTIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed May 8, 1920. Serial No.- 379,891.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GORDON ALEXANDER ALLAN KING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bows and Neckties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bows or neckties of the kind consisting of a strip of material adapted to be tied by the wearer into the desired shape of knot or bow.
One method of tying a bow with this class of tie is to manipulate the strip in such a manner that both ends or wings of the how are formed by a single folded end of the strip, the other end of the strip being passed over the folded end and through the knot at the back thereof and being then tuckedaway under the collar of the wearer out of sight. The bow formed in. this manner has one end of a double thickness of material and one of a single thickness.
This method, although being simple, is open to the objection that the loose end often causes discomfort when tucked under the collar and is also liable to slip out and produce an unsightly appearance.
This invention has for its object to overcome these objections by providing a tie of the kind described with means for effectively concealing the loose end when tied, without discomfort to the wearer, said end being also securely held in. place.
According to the invention, the end of the strip or tie which, when the bow or knot is tied, forms the free or loose end, is narrowed down more or less to a tapering point and is preferably stiffened and a slit is provided at a suitable point in the length of the strip or tie.
Vith this arrangement, after the bow or knot has been tied and the free narrowed end drawn through, the latter is inserted in the slit and is passed therethrough and lies held securely between the collar and the portion of the tie passing around same.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view showing a tie shaped according to the invention partially tied, and Fig. 2
shows the tie with the bow or knot completely tied and the free end secured and hldden, one end or wing of the bow being turned up for the sake of clearness.
As shown, the tie 1 has an end 2, which is tapered down substantially to a point, a suitable length of this point being stiflened in any suitable manner. A slit 3 is provided in the length of the tie.
After the bow or knot has been tied as in Fig. 2, the end 2 is pushed through the slit 3 and passed behind the tie and thus lies securely held out of sight without any discomfort to the wearer between the collar and the back of the tie. The other end 4 of the tie, which forms the wings of the bow or knot, may be shaped in any desired manner. The length of the narrow end 2 and the position of the slit 3 may be so arranged that the slit is hidden behind the wing of the how when the tie is tied, as shown in the drawing.
Instead of the slit passing completely through the tie as here shown, as ties are usually tubular it could be formed in one side of the tie only, the loose end then being passed through said slit and retained inside the tie, but the arrangement illustrated will be found the most convenient.
Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim:
A necktie of the kind described, having one end tapered or narrowed substantially to a point and stiffened, and having a slit at a suitable point in its length so that when the other end of the tie has been manipulated into the form of a bow having one end of double thickness and the other end of a single thickness of material in the known manner, the tapered or narrowed end may be inserted in the slit and pushed between the collar and the portion of the tie passing around same, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have signed mv name to this specification.
GORDON ALEXANDER ALLAN KING.
