GARMEN'T-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 151221..
Application filed November 11, 1920. Serial No. 423,433. p
To aZZ ill/0m it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK D. LA VALLE, a citizen of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention relates to separable fasteners and more particularly to garment fasteners especially designed for use on ladies underskirts.
The4 invention 'contemplates and seeks for its main object to provide a simple and effective fastening device of the character described which is readily and quickly operable to effect the fastening or unfastening of a garment, or other article to which it is applied.
Another advantage and object featured by the invention is the strength and durability of the construction, the simplicity in the manipulation of the same, and the cheapness with which it may be manufactured and attached to the garment.
With the above recited and other objects in View, some of which will appear hereafter, reference is had to the following specification, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which;
Figure l is a view of a garment equipped with the fastener showing the same in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the device unfastened.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line l-l of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the members prior to its application to the garment. A
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, S designates a skirt provided with the usual gathered elastic waist band B, having a placket P.
he fastener preferably includes a pair of identically constructed separable members l() each of which comprises a base ll constructed of a strip of metal and preferably provided with an integral offset hooked portion 12 which extends from one of the longitudinal edges adjacent one of its ends and is bent outwardly and downwardly to dispose the free extremity thereof in spaced garment, which relation to the base. The base is provided with means for securing the same to the preferably consists in providing' integral tubular rivets 13 drawn therefrom as illustrated. 'In applying the fastener to a garment the base ll of one of the members l0 is secured to the outer sur-- face of the waist band B adjacent the edge of the under flap of the placket l), with 4the hooked portion l2 thereof disposed outwardly from the waist band, and the base of the other member l0 is secured to the inner face of the waist band adjacent the edge of the outer` flap of the placket. By this arrangement when the fastener is closed, the hook l2 of each member l() will embrace and co-actwith the base and portion of the waist band to which. the other member is secured, to prevent lateral displacement of the members, and the confronting side edges of the hooked portions will contact and co-act with each other to prevent longitudinal relative separation of the flaps of the placket.
To fasten the skirt, the hooked portions l2 of each member is simultaneously engaged over the base ll of the opposite member adjacent the ends remote from the hooked portion and the portion of the waist band to which said bases are secured: the members are then moved relatively to advance the hooks l2 toward each other until their confronting ends are in contacting engagement. To unfasten the garment the members l0 are moved relatively to separate the hook members l2 from each other and then disengaged from the the portion of the waist band to which said bases are secured. The hook while described and illustrated as forming an integral part of its base, may be constructed of a separate piece of material and secured thereto and if desired the rivets may also be made as separate elements.
While there has been illustrated and described a single and preferred embodiment of the invention, no limitation is necessaril made thereto, as it is to be understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually shown herein, to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the yclaims are expressed, and by variations in the phraseology of the same.
I claim:
l. A. separable fastener comprising a plurality of members each provided with bases ll and a base having an offset portion, the saiduoffset portions adapted for interengagement with the bases when in closed position for securing the same against lateral separation and for interengagement with each other vvhereby to limit relative longitudinal movement.
2. A separable fastener comprising a plurality of members, each provided With a base having an offset hooked portion7 the said oiiset hooked pcrtion of one member adapted for interengagement With tliebase of the other member when in closed position, as and :tor the purpose specied.
3. A separable fastener comprising a plurality of members including a base provided with an oilset portion constituting laterally spaced hooks, the hooks of each .member adapted vor intenengagement With the body. portion of the other member when in closed position for securing the members against lateral separation, said hooks adapted to engage and Contact With each other to limit the relative longitudinal movement of themembers in one direction.
4E. A garment fastener including a plurality or' separable members, each comprising a base havingY a hooked portion on one of its sides adjacent one end thereof7 said base adapted for securernent to a garment', each of said hooks adapted to embrace and co-act With the base ot the other member to secure the members against lateral displacement, said hooks adapted to engage and coact With each other to limit'relative longitudinal movement, in one direction.
5. A garment fastener including a pair of identically formed members, ea-chcom* prising a base adaptedto be secured to a garment and an integral lioolrprovided on said base adjacent on ,end thereof and hatTF ing its free extremity overlying said base in spaced' relation thereto, said hooks adapted to embrace and co-act withY the bases of the other member andwith one another to secure the members against lateral'displacement and longitudinal separation in one direction.
