Description

UNITED N uSTATES PATENT FFICE CLINTON H. LEGGETT, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,261, dated April 29, 1873; application led February 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON H. LEGGETT, of Elizabeth, county of Union and State ot' New Jersey, have invented an Improved Match- Sate, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Object of the Intention.
My invention relates to safes for holding matches; and consists in a novel manner of constructing and uniting the parts, whereby their manufacture is greatly cheapened and facilitated.
Description of the Drawing.
General Description.
The safe is composed of four pieces, namely, the back A, which is struck up out of sheet metal by suitably-shaped dies, and having formed thereon the flan ges a. a', ears b b', and recess or groove c; the matchbox B, its cover C, and the shell D, for receiving the burnt matches. On the box and shell are formed anges c, between which the flanges a a on the back piece A fit and forma dovetai1-joint. The flanges on the back plate, from their shape, are capable of being bent in or out to accommodate themselves to the width of the slot in the box or shell, which is a great advantage over a rigid back, as the cast receptacles vary in size, and this would ai'ect the t of the joint were both the parts rigid. The box and shell are prevented from coming oft the back by the ears b b', which are clinched over the edges of them, as shown in Fig. 1. vThe cover C is formed from sheet-metal by dies and has its hinge-edge 0l turned over to form the pin on which it is to turn. This pin d, (see Fig. 4,) rests in the recess c in the back piece A, and is kept in its place by the pieces f on the back of the box B.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I construct my safe in separate pieces, and, by means described, readily and firmly unite them. By making the back and cover of sheet metal I can manufacture them very cheaply.
The sheet-metal parts are corrugated to give them additional strength, as is the box B, which is also provided with a roughened surfaceunderneath on which to ignite the matches.
The back plate A is provided with a hole under the match-receptacle for the purpose of securing it against a wall, &c., by meansA of a tack or screw.
Claims.
l. The combination, with the cups B D, of the sheet-metal plate A provided with the clamping and holding parts a n b b', substantially in the manner described and shown in the drawing.
2. As a new and improved article of manufacture, a match-safe composed ot' the cast cups B D, united together by the parts A, a a', e c', and b b', constructed substantially as described and specified.
CLINTON H. LEGGETT.
