IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-BOXES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,836, dated J annary 16, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. JUDD, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection With the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this speciication and represents, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of match-boxes which are provided with a swinging or hinged cover, and consists in thepeculiar manner hereinafter described of forming the hinged connection between the box and cover.
A is the box proper; C, the cover; B, the back. The back is made separate from the box, and each formed with a corresponding ear or lug, c c, upon the bottom, so that when set together and a rivet inserted through the two they are rmly secured together and made as one piece.- On each end of the box, in the process of cast-ing, I form a lug, d, and on the back, at each end, another lug, b, as seen in Fig. 2, so that when set together the space between the lugs corresponds to a trunnion, n,
on the end of the cover.
Previous to securing the back to the box the cover is placed in position, the trunnion n set onto the lug d, then the back placed in posision, the lug b covering the trunnion, so that when secured together, as before described, the two lugs b d form a bearing for the trunnion to allow the cover to swing freely.
The great advantage of this construction is, that I am enabled to cast the parts complete, so as to be set together without the necessary finishing or toolwvork of any character, other than that of setting the rivet.
As a convenience for setting the box upon a shelf or in any other position, I form, upon the front, legs D corresponding in height to the lugs a in the rear.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described match-box, consisting of the box A, back B, and cover C, constructed and united together substantially in the manner specified.
