IMPROVEMENT IN SCRUBBING-NIIACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,129, dated April 22, 1873; application filed October 23, 1872.

Be it known that I, SIMIEON H. BUSH, of Boistfort, in the county of Lewis and Terri- 1 tory of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Scrubber, Mopper, and Wringer; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for scrubbing and mopping floors or other similar surfaces and for wringing the mop used, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this speciction, and in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of my machine when used as a scrubber. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of my machine when used as a mopper, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a part of the same.

A A represent the two side pieces, between which the working parts of my machine are placed, said side pieces being constructed in any suitable manner to accomplish their object. In the side pieces A A the round ends of a square shaft or axle, a, have their bearings and revolve, and upon this shaft or axle is placed a wheel, B, keyed in the center of the shaft by means of pins or keys b b. The wheel B is bisected centrally, being in fact two wheels placed side by side, and each having a circumferential flange, cl, around its outer edge. In the front ends of the side pieces A Aare placed two cross-bars, O O, one at the upper and the other at the lower edges,

in which cross-bars revolves a vertical shaft,

e, by means of a belt, E, passing around the wheel B and around a pulley, D, placed on said shaft between the two crossbars. Upon the lower end ofthe shaft e is placed a circular brush, G, which thus revolves when the machine is in motion, the wheelB supporting the machine and furnishing the motive power. The brush G is surrounded by a circular hoop, H, suspended from the side pieces by hooked ears ffil This hoop confines the water and prevents its splashing about when the brush revolves. The machine is pushed forward by the operator by means of Va tongue, I, passed through a cross-bar, J, mortised into the side pieces at their rear ends. t

For mopping, the tongue I, hoop H, and brush G are removedas well as the belt E; and then the two parts of the wheel B are separated on the shafta, as shown in Fig. 4. A rod, K, is then passed through the crossbar J between the two halves of the wheel B, and to the inner end of this rod the mop N is attached. The end of the mop is held by a bar or holder, M, placed on the lower end of the shaft e close up to the side pieces, and secured to them by any suitable means.

The machine is then moved in every direction over the wet surface, and when necessary to wring the mop the rod K, which forms the handle for the mopper, is revolved, which twists the mop and thus wrings the water out ofthe same. A a

When the machine is used as a scrubber a water-vessel is placed in any suitable position on the machine to supply a small stream of water.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
