Description

J. AMBRUN & E. OLFERMANN.
Door-Latch Handles.
N 138 112 PatentedApril22,l873.-
AM. PHOT0 UTIIOGIAPIIIC C0. NYv (Us/10mm; PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT UFFIGE.
JULIUS AMBRUN AND ERNST OLFERMANN, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-LATCH HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138, 112, dated April 22,1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JULIUs AMBRUN and ERNST OLFERMANN, residing in Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Bolts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, ref erence being had to the annexed drawing, in which is represented a view of our invention, with the lever in elevation and the bolt in section, the device being adjusted to a door set in a frame, which represents the upper surface of an ice-box or refrigerator.
This invention relates to that class of doorfastenin gs in which a sliding bolt is used 5 and the nature thereof consists in combining with such a bolt a lever or handle ofosuch construction as to enable the bolt to be withdrawn from the socket or mortise in the doorjamb, and also to act as a pry to assist in opening the door, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
The sliding bolt A is confined within a castmetal case, a, with lateral and end flanges, through which fastenings are inserted for securing the case to the door. The rear end of bolt A is pressed by a coiled spring, a inclosed by the case a, and its upper surface is constructed with teeth a B is a lever or handle, which is supplied upon its lower side with an arm, I), having teeth 11 which take into the teeth a of the bolt A for operating or throwing the latter inwardly. The lever B is fulcrumed upon posts or supports 0, fastened to the top of the bolt-case a in any known way. The forward end of the lever B is caused to project or extend to a point opposite the door-jamb, and then curved or bent toward the same within a short distance thereof, as shown in the drawing. The object of this construction is to enable the lever or handle to act upon the doorjamb so as to pry the door open as the handle is grasped in unbolting the door.
This device can be used to great advantage in connection with ice-box and refrigerator doors.
To prevent the lever defacing or tearing the door-jamb in prying the door open, a metallic plate, D, is applied to the jamb. The rear arm of the lever is prolonged to enable it to be easily grasped and give it purchase.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the sliding bolt A, of the lever or handle B b, of such construction as to act upon the doorjamb and pry the door open when the bolt is thrown in or withdrawn from the jamb, substantiallyas specifled.
In testimony whereof we have signed the foregoing specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS AMBRUN. ERNST OLFERMANN.
