Be it known that I, Cr-rannns F. Howns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin' Balance Pulleys and Collars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoe sole edge trimming machines, and the primary object of the invention is'to provide an improved means for balancing the operating shaft carrying the shoe sole edge trimmer or cutter so as to effectively eliminate the loose motion in the shaft and thereby permit better, easier and quicker work to be accomplished.
In a machine of this character, it has been found that after use, the shaft becomes loose and has a tendency to move side'wise or longitudinally in the bearings which prevents accurate and quick work'as well as adding to the wear and tear on the machine. It is therefore another object of the invention to provide an improved means for eliminating these undesirable features, in a scientific and efficient manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means for balancing the operating shaft of the shoe sole edge trimmer which can be quickly and readily actuated by the operator of the machine.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an improved device which can be efliciently used to balance all kinds of shafts, as well as the operating shaft of sole edge trimming machines. I
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved balancing mechanism for shafts, of the above character,
which is durable and etficient in use, one simple and easy to manufacture, and one -which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
()ther objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:

I Referring to the drawings, in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates a shoe sole trimming machine, including the head B rotatably supporting the sole edge trims ming shaft or spindle C having the improved pulley D embodying the balancing mechanism of the central portion of the shaft and a balancing mechanism E adjacent the outer end thereof which can be used as a pulley for the grinder 1 when so desired.
The edge trimming machine 41 is constructed in the ordinary orany desired man ner and the head B thereof is provided with the ordinary space alined bearings 5 for the reception of the rotatable shaft or spindle C- The bearings "5 are provided with the usual oil cups 6 and the upper ends of the same carry the guide yoke 7 for the reception of the pulley belt- (not shown).
One end of the shaft C carries the usual sole edge trimmer or cutter 8. Below the head B, the frame A carries the shank edge operating shaft 10 and associate parts which are of the ordinary or any preferred construction; I
The pulley D is split transversely or diametrically through the central portion thereof to define the pulley. sections 11 and 12 which have the peripheries thereof curved downwardly and outwardly toward the outer edges thereofj Annular guard flanges 13 are formed on the outer edges of the pulley sections 11 and'lQ so as to prevent the carrying the set screw 16. The body ofthe pulley section 11 diametrically opposite the set screw 16 is provided with the inwardly extending recess 17 and the metal takenfrom ,be seen thatby turning one of the pulley sections, the weighted end thereof will be moved out of balance with the other pulley section and thus form means for balancing the shaft C. p
The pulley section 12 has its inner edge provided with equi-distantly spaced graduations 18 and the pulley section 11 has :its
outer surface at the inner edge thereofprovided with the pointer line 19, and when it is desired or found necessary to balance the shaft, the set screw 16 is loosened and the pulley section 11 is turned one notch or graduation in either direction, until "the direction is found in which the pulley section 11 can be turned which will have a tendency toovercome the overbalancing of the shaft. The pulley section 11 isturned as many notches as desired until the shaft is perfectly balanced at which time the set screw 16 is tightened so as to bite into the shaft 0. 1
When the shaft Chas a tendency to mov longitudinally in the bearings, the set screws 1% and 16 are loosened, and the sections 11 and 12 of the pulley are moved in opposite directions into tight engagementwith the sides of the bearings, afterwhich ithe set screws are again tightened so as to lock the pulley sections on the shaft. This eliminates any side sway of the shaft.
It has also been found necessary to provide means mounted on the rear end of the shaft C to effect a perfect and true balancing of the shaft, and the balancing bursE are provided for that purpose. The balancing burs E include twoseparate members or collars 20 and 21 and the same are arranged on The collar 20 is preferably over balanced before being applied to the shaft C and the same is provided with an inwardly extending aperture 22 adjacent the set screw 23, which is adapted to bite into the shaft C is secured the collar thereto. Themetal taken from the opening 22 lightens the collar at this point and thus ovcrweighs the portion directly opposite. The collar 21 constitutes the means, in connection with the collar 20 for balancing the rear end of the shaft 0 and the same is provided diametrically opposite the set screw 24; which forms means for securing the collar on the shaft C with an inwardly extending opening 25. The metal taken from the opening lightens this portion of the collar 21 and thus overweighs the opposite portion thereof which is directly opposite to the overweighted portion of the collar 20. The collars 20 and 21 are provided with. pointer marks 27 and 27 and when the marks are in alinement the overweighted portions of the collars are directly opposite to each other and the collars are balanced in relation to each other. The periphery of the collar structure 20 adjacent the outer edge thereof is provided with a plurality of equi-distantly spaced graduations 26 and the collar 21 is provided with the cooperating pointer or mark 7 27, and when it is found necessary to balance the rear end of the shaft, the set screw 24 is loosened and the collar 21 is turned in the desired direction a suitable number of graduations to bring the weighted end thereof out of alinement with the weighted end of the collar 20, until the shaft is balanced. The set screw 24: is then again tightened so as to hold the collar and shaft against'relative movement.
' From the foregoing description, it can be seen an improved and effective meansis provided for balancing the shaft of a shoe sole edge trimmer and for preventing relative longitudinal movement thereof in the supporting bearings which can be operated by the ordinary skilled mechanic.
While as shown theinvention applies to a shoe sole edging machine, it is to be understood thatthe same can be used for balancing shafts used for other purposes, and as stated in one of the objectsof the invention.
.The size of the balance pulleys or wheels may be varied for large or small shafts.
The device may also be effectively used as a balance wheel or a shoe to balan'ce the grinding wheel, such as emery wheels or the like. Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention; but,
I claim: 1. A device for balancing shafts comprising a pair of weighted annular members,
.and means for adjusting said members. the shaft adjacentthe outer end thereof.
'2. A. device for balancing shafts comprising a pair of weighted annular members, and independent .means for holding the members in an adjusted position.
3. ,A. device for balancing shafts including a weighted graduated member, a second weighted member, means for adjustingsaid weighted .members, and a pointer formed on said second weighted member for cooperation with the graduations on the first weighted membera a. A devicefor balancing shafts comprising a split pulley arranged on the shaft,
one section of the pulley being overbalanced, at one side, and the other section be- .ing overbalanced at the opposite side as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination with a shoe sole edge trimming machine includin a head, spaced bearings carried by the head, a shaft mounted in the bearings, of a split pulley arranged on the shaft intermediate the bearings, the sections of the pulley being mounted on the shaft independently of each other.
6. The combination with a shoe sole edge trimming machine including a head, spaced bearings carried by the head, a shaft mounted in the bearings, of a pulley arranged on the shaft intermediate the bearings including a pair of independent sections, said sections being adapted to be adjusted toward or away from each other.
7. The combination with a shoe sole edge trimming machine including a pair of spaced bearings, a shaft mounted in said bearings, of a split pulley arranged on the shaft intermediate the bearings and including a pair of independent sections, said sections being adapted to be adjusted toward or away from each other, and means for holding thesections in adjusted positions.
The combination with machine including a pair of spaced bearings, a shaft rotatably carried -by the bearings, of a split pulley mounted on said shaft intermediate the bearings for adjustment longitudinally and circumferentially of said shaft.
9. The combination with a machine including a pair of bearings, a shaft rotatably carried by the bearings, of a pulley mounted on the shaft intermediate the bearings including a pair of independent annular sections, said sections being adapted to be adjusted longitudinally and circumferentially of the shaft and independent means for holding the sections in adjusted positions.
10. The combination with a machine inmovement circumferentially of the shaft,
the o her section being overbalanced at one side opposite to the overbalancedportion of the first mentioned section, one of said sections having a series of graduations thereon, a pointer carried by the other section for cooperating with the graduations.
11. The combination with a shoe trimming machine including a head, a pair of bearings, a shaft rotatably mounted in the bearings, a cutter disk carried by one ter minal of the shaft, and adjustable balancing means carried by the shaft intermediate its ends.
12. The combination with a shoe trimming machine including a shaft, of means positioned intermediate the ends of the shaft for balancing the same, and means positioned adjacent one end of the shaft for balancing the same.
13. The combination with a shoe trimming machine including a shaft, of independent balancing means mounted on the shaft intermediate its ends and adjacent one end thereof.
14. The combination with a shoe trimming machine including a pair of spaced bearings, a shaft rotatably carried by the bearings, and a balancing means for the shaft including balancing means carried by the shaft intermediate its ends, and independent balancing means carried by the outer terminal of the shaft and including a pair of collars, the collars being overweighted and capable of adjustment circumferentially of said shaft.
