J. C. JENNINGS.
' PILLOW CASE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 27. I920.

sTATEs JOHN 0. JENNINGS, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
PILLOW-CASE.
Application filed September 2 T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN C. JnNNiNes, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Kansas Cit county of lVyandotte, State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Pillow-Cases, of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention relates to pillow cases, and is designed more especially for use on chair cars and the like, where passengers desire to doze or sleep protected from the glare of light, from smoke, cinders and dust entering windows of the car, and with a measure of privacy as regards other occupants of the car and those passing therethrough.
The object of the invention is to produce a pillow case having an extension susceptible of being draped over the face of the person resting on the pillow, and with means for preventing the extension from being blown or slipping to inoperative position.
To this end, the invention consists in the provision of a pillow ease with an extension adapted to be draped from the top over the face of the user of the pillow, with means for securing the extension in such draped or operative position, as hereniafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing a person seated in a car with her head resting upon a pillow incased in a pillow case embodying the invention, and showing the extension of the pillow case draped over her face and secured against accidental displacement.
Fig. 2 is a perspecti e view of the pillow case, the same being partly broken away to more clearly show the pillow therein.
In the said drawing, 1 indicates a pillow case of any suitable or preferred type and material, but differing from an ordinary pillow ease in the following respects: It is provided with fastening devices at its open end, preferably in the form of buttons 2 and buttonholes 3 for engaging such buttons and thus holding the pillow l in place, though it will be understood that any kind of fastening means for closing the mouth of the pillow case may be employed, in fact, the
means for fastening the pillow case in closed position may be dispensed with, though the use of such fastening means is desirable as a guard against the unsighthness of a p1l- Specification of Letters Patent.

low proj end of the case, tension 5 of the ecting from the case. At the open it is provided with an exsame or any other suitable material, and of size capable of being freely draped over the face of a person resting against the pillow in order to give to such person protection from the glare of light, the gaze of other persons in the 'car,'and from smoke, dust and the like blowing into the car. As a great deal of travel is in dulged in in the hot season of the year when the windows of the car are open, it is desirable to provide means for preventing the extension from being blown to inoperative position should the person using the.
pillow doze or fall asleep and to accomplish this, the free end of the extension is equipped with a pair of tapes 6 terminating in loops 7, the tapes being sui'liciently long to permit such person to slip her hands through the loops and then rest them comfortably with the assurance that the extension cannot be thrown to inoperative position or slip or be raised from draped position without her knowledge.
A pillow caseof the type described will be found superior to a newspaper or handkerchief or the like for protecting the face of a person reclining against the pillow, as such a pillow case will not only afford much be ter protection against displacement, but is far more sanitary and decorative, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred construction of the pillow, case, it
it is susceptible of will be apparent that particulars without modifications in minor departing from the principle of construction involved.
I claim:
1.. A pillow case having an, extension adapted to overlap the front side of the pillow ease and cover the face of a person resting against the pillow, tapes attached at their upper ends to the extension and fastening means at the lower ends of the tapes adapted to be anchored to hold the extension in operative position. a
2. A pillow case having an extension adaptedto overlap the front side of the pillow case and cover the face of a person resting against the pillow, and tapes fastened to the extension and terminating in loops through which the hands of the person may be passed. I
In witness whereof, I hereunto ailix my signature.
JOHN C. JENNINGS.
