Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salinas, in the county of Monterey and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Pockets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to wearing apparel, and more particularly, to an improved safety ocket.

The lnvention has more especial reference to a pocket of the character stated, which is illustrated for 'ment of my invention, will be clear will positively prevent the loss of various articles therefrom, irrespective of the position 'of the same, and .also one which will prevent the theft of matter therefrom.

More particularly, the present invention has reference to the novel construction and arrangement of the safety -attachment for the pocket, the same comprising several pieces of material affixed to the pocket, adjacent the mouth thereof, and having their side marginal edges partially united by stitching; a resilient frame being attached to each of the pieces and extending about the side and lower marginal edges thereof, thus, causing the same to be yieldably held together.

All of the foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangement of the parts of the preferred embodifrom the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein said embodiment of the invention the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present invention.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the pocket with my improved safety attachment applied thereto, showing a portion of the ocket broken away to indicate the arrange` ment of the safety attachment therein,

Referring now more particularly to the drawin and in connection with which like re erence numerals will refer to the same parts-throughout the several views, I have indicated the wearing apparel generally by the numeral 1, while the pocket is thus providing tion of the same to bow,

The present invention comprises several strips of flexible material, such for instancel as that from which the garment is made, these pieces being indicated by the numerals 3 and 4. The upper marginal edges of the flexible pieces 3 and 4 are hemmed, as shown at 5 and 6 and then attached to the pocket at a point, adjacent the mouth thereof by means of the usual stitching. The flexible pieces 3 and 4 are tapered slightly and have their side marginaledges united by stitching as at 7 and 7 for a portion of the length thereof, thereby allowing the pieces to be moved apart at their lower portions. The remainder of the side portions is left open, for means whereby the same may be separated sufliciently to admit the hand of the wearer. It will also be noted that the top portion of the flexible pieces 3 and 4 are so united as to permit that porthus, enabling the user toreadily insert his hand in the pocket when desired. To provide for means whereby the lower portion of the flexible pieces 3 and 4 and the open side portions thereof may be normally held together, I aliix to each of the said pieces, adjacent the lower and side marginal edges thereof, a frame comprising a single strip of wire bent upon itself to constitute a pair of resilient jaws 8 and 9. These resilient jaws 8 and 9 are preferably secured to the lower and side marginal edges of the flexible pieces 3 and 4 b turning portions thereof over and securlng the same by stitching, thus providing for eilicient pocketing means.

From the foregoing, it will be evident, that the hand of the user may' be readily inserted within the pocket, inasmuch, as the said flexible pieces 3 and 4 are so connected as to permit the same to readily move apart when desired. Thus, when an article is placed within the pocket 2, the same will be prevented from passing or becoming dis-- placed therefrom, by means of the safety attachment as 'formed by the flexible pieces 3 and 4, it being noted.l that the lower and side marginal edges of the same are normally heldtogether by means ofthe resilient jaws S and 9 which are affixed thereto adjacent said edges. Should the pocket be inverted the articles as contained theredged between either of the fiexible pieces 3 and 4 and the side walls of the pocket 2,the said resilient jaws 8 and 9 possessin suiiicient resiliency to hold the same toget er andsprevent the articlesand other persons whose work compels them' to bend into various positions, consequently, inverting their pockets, and causing the various articles as contained thereby to move toward the mouth thereof,- and consequently lost. It will be also appreciated, that the device will provide elicient means for preventing the pocket from being picked by thieves, the wires possessing such resiliency as will cause the pocket to sag slightly when the hand is passed therebetween, consequently impartlng a pull to the garment of the person.

While I have herein disclosed a specific embodiment of the invention, it will be a parent to persons skilled in the art, that tliie invention is capable of embodiment in other forms and devices, differing in detail and arrangement from that shown, as' may be in keeping with the hereto appended claim.

Having thus.described the invention, what is claimed is In a pocket, the combination of a safety device therefor, comprising a pair of iexible pieces, the upper edges of said pieces bein looped over and stitched to said pocket a Lamps? jacent the mouth thereof, said pieces being of substantially the same length as the entrance to the pocket adjacent their upper edges, said pieces having their side edges converging toward the lower edges thereof, said pieces being stitched along their side edges from points adjacent their upper edges of said pieces to points adjacent the 40 center thereof, whereby the lower portions of said pieces and portions adjacent the'side tapered edges will be free to open, a wire frame formed of a single strand of wire and being bent to form resilient jaws, the side port1ons of said jaws diverging toward their upper portions, the free side ed es of said pieces being looped around sait jaws and stitched upon themselves for providing an even inner surface between sald jaws, said jaws being of substantially the same size so as to be in direct alinement with each other when in a normal condition, thus formin a tight closure for the free portion of sai pieces althoufgh allowing thev wearer to insert a hand or urging the jaws apart and permitting access within said safety device when desired.
