To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Pnn O. NELSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Builders Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to builders tools, and the object is to provide a simple, efiicient and practical device for use in securing sheet metal corner beads in straight and perfectly vertical position on wall corners previous to the securing of laths and plaster to the wall adjacent thereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the top part of the tool.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the tool, showing it as gripping a corner head while the latter is being nailed to a corner.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fractional view of the gripping tool as seen when looking in the direction of the arrow 3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 4l4 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals 5 designates the upright studding of the inwardly projecting corner of a room wall, said wall being adapted to be covered with laths and plaster as indicated, respectively, by dotted lines 6 and 7. In View of the fragile nature of plaster it has been found advisable to strengthen such projecting corners with sheet metallic beads as at 8, the same being secured to the studding 5 by nails 9. The use of such heads have proved very practical, the only objection being that in nailing them on they have a tendency to twist and bend out of true vertical position.
To overcome this difiiculty I have provided a device consisting of a main body member 10 formed in cross section throughout its length as shown substantially in Figs. 2 and 4:- To one of the slanting edges of the tool I fix, with suitable nails or screws 11, a strip 19, having a curved inner edge 13 adapted to engage the longitudinal groove 14 directly behind the corner of the bead member 8. On the other slanting edge is positioned a strip 15 (similar to 12) having a curved edge 16 adapted to coact with the edge 13 and firmly grip the bead 8 therebetween,
The strip 15 is provided with a number of spaced transverse slots 17 (see Fig. 3) up through which extends perforated lugs 18 which are fixed in the main body member 10. A securing strip 19 is placed on top of the strip 15 and is provided with a number of integral longitudinally extending fingers 20 adapted to simultaneously slida-bly engage in the perforated lugs 18.
The fingers 20, as will be particularly noticed in Fig. 4, are made smaller at their ends. Thus when the strip 19 is raised, and only the small ends of the fingers engage the lugs 18, enough play will be given the strip 15 so that a wider space will result between the edges 13 and 16, thus allowing a head 8 to be removed or inserted. If a bead is inserted, it is then tightened or gripped by pressing the strip 19 down again.
\ convenient means for actuating and limiting the movement of the strip 19 is shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and consists of a hand lever 21, pivoted at 22 to the body 10 and provided with a knob 23. The lever'21 is further provided with a geared portion 24 adapted to engage a rack 25 which is integral with the strip 19. A stop 26 limits the movement of the lever 21 and prevents the fingers 20 from being pulled out of en gagement with the lugs 18.
The instrument is further provided with an inclosed spirit level 27, thus enabling the operator to determine a true vertical position of the bead before securing it.
It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the form and structure of this device, if such modifications come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having now therefore fully shown and described my invention what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patcut is:
1. A device of the class described, consisting of a main body member, the same having two diverging faces at one edge thereof, a longitudinal strip fixed on one of said faces, a clamping strip positioned on the other face and having one of its edges in parallel coacting relation to the adjacent edge of the first mentioned strip, and means for clamping said adjacent strip edges toward each other.
2. A device of the class described, consisting of a main body member, the same T thereof, a longitudinal strip fixed on one of said faces, a clamping strip positioned on the other face and having one of its edges in parallel coacting relation to the adjacent edge of the first mentioned strip, and means for clamping said adjacent strip edges toward each other, said body member having a longitudinal recess adjacent said mentioned strip edges.
3. A device of the class described, consisting of a main body member, two angularly disposed clamping strips positioned on said body member, the same having parallel coacting adjacent edges, one of said strips being fixed on the body member, the other strip being provided with a series of spaced slots, perforated lugs fixed in said body member and extending up through said slots, tapered fingers engaging said lugs and means for actuating said fingers simultaneously. 4. A device of the class described, consisting of a main body member, two angularly disposed clamping strips positioned on said body member, the same having parallel coacting adjacent edges, one of said strips being fixed onthe body member, the other strip being provided with a series of spaced slots, perforated lugs fixed in said body member and extending up through said slots, an actuating strip slidably positioned on. said last mentioned strip, and a series of tapered fingers integral with said actuating strip, said fingers engaging said lugs.
A device of the class described, consisting of a main body member, two angularly disposed clamping strips positioned on said body member, the same having parallel coacting adjacent edges, one of said strips being fixed on the body member, the other strip being provided with a series of spaced slots, perforated lugs fixed in said body member and extending up through said slots, an actuating strip slidably positioned on said last mentioned strip, a series oftapered fingers integral withsaid actuating strip, said fingers slidably engaging said lugs, and means for limiting the sliding movement of said actuating strip.
6. A device of the class described, consisting of a main body member, two angnlarly disposed clamping strips positioned on said body member, the same having parallel coacting adjacent edges, one of said strips beingfixed on the body member, the other strip being provided with a series of spaced slots, perforated lugs fixed in said body member and extenoing up through said slots, an actuating strip slidably positioned on said last mentioned strip, a series of tapered fingers integral with said actuating strip, said fingers slidably engaging said lugs, and manual means for moving said actuating strip up and down.
