Be it known that I, JosnrH SOMORA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Keyhole Guards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in key-hole guards, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed. I
An object of my invention is to provide a key-hole guard adapted to be applied to a lock of an ordinary construction and having means movable relative the key-hole of the lock, and other means controlling the operation of the first named means to main tain the same in position to permit or to prevent insertion of a key into the keyhole.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described having a shutter or slide provided with a keyhole opening and arranged to be moved relative a lock to which applied to move the key-hole therein into and out of registration with the key-hole of the lock, and a combination controlled mechanism cooperating with the shutter to lock the same in position to permit or to prevent the insertion of a key into the key-hole.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type descrbied that can be operatively' applied to a lock of an ordinary construction without any changes being necessary in the construction of the latter.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is relatively simple in construction and operation, thoroughly effective for the purpose intended, and practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a fragmentary portion of a door, showing the device operatively applied to an ordinary mortise lock.

Referring now to the drawings, it will b noted that the embodiment of the invention illustrated therein can he operatively applied to a mortise lock 1 that is secured in position in a mortise 2 in a door 3 in an ordinary manner, the spindle 40f the lock projecting laterally of the door at both sides thereof and having knobs 5 secured thereon.
In carrying out my invention, I remove the door plate (not shown) that is secured to the outer side of the door to correspond with the door plate 6 that is secured to the inner side of the door, as shown in Fig. 1. I replace the outer door plate with a casing 7 that is open at its inner side and has a relatively wide upper end wall 8, side walls 9 and 10 having reduced portions 11 and 12, respectively, thereby defining shoulders 11 and 12. The lower end wall 13 of'the casing 7 is reduced in height at 13l3 and is provided with a recess 14 intermediate its length. The recess 14 has parallel walls 1515. The casing 7 is fashioned in such a manner that its outer side 16 resembles in appearance the door plate 6 and in fact I may make use of the outer door plate ordinarily provided as a part of the lock 1 in forming the casing 7. The outer side 16 is provided with an opening 17 through which the spindle 1 projects and one of the knobs 5 is positioned exterior of the casing 7, as shown. The side 16 is also formed with a key-hole opening 18 registering with the key-holes through the door 3, the lock 1, and the doorplate 6.
Referring now to Fig. 5, it will be noted that spaced apart guide members 19 having the form of flat bars are secured to the inner wall of the side 16 in spaced apart parallel relation by means of screws 20. The guide members 19 are fashioned with re cesses in their adjacent edges extendingthe entire length thereof to provide shoulders 21-21 arranged to overlie co'ciperating shoulders 2222 along the edges of a shutter or slide 23 that is therefore slidably maintained in position to be moved transversely of the casing 7 between the walls 9 and 10. The-shutter 23 is formed with a key-hole 24 therethrough and this key-hole is moved into and out of registration with the key-hole 18 as the shutter 23 is moved across the casing 7. The shutter 23 is also provided with a stud 25 projected through a slot 26 in the side 16 and having the portion thereof projecting exterior of the side 16 formed into a handle 27 that can be conveniently grasped to occasion a movement of the shutter 23. The shutter 23 is also provided with horizontally alined spaced apart detents 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32 projecting laterally of the outer surface of the shutter 23 at a spaced distance from the lower edge thereof.
A carrying plate 33 is fitted in the casin 7 between the reduced wall portions 11 ano 12, as best seen in Fig. 3. The upper edge of the carrying plate 33 abuts against the shoulders 11 and 12 while the lower end portion thereof projects beyond the lower end of the casing 7. The inner surface of the carrying plate 33 rests upon the surface of the lower end wall of the casing 7 while the outer surfacethereof is contiguous to the outer wall of the door 3. The carrying plate 33 has an opening there through registering with the key-hole opening 18 in the side 16 of the casing 7 when the carrying plate is secured in the position shown in Fig. 3 by means of screws 35 projected through the latter and screwing into the threaded openings 36 in the guide members 19.
Referring particularly to Fig. 4, it will be noted that the upper portion of the carrying plate 33 is enlarged inwardly to provide a shoulder 37 extending the width of V the plate and that the enlarged portion thereof is provided with spaced apart parallel ways 38 and 39 extending between the shoulder 37 and the upper end of the plate and having a depth substantially equal to the thickness of the enlargement, where fore the bottoms of the ways 38 and 39 lie in the same plane as the inner surface of i the lower portion of the carrying plate. The
carymg plate 33 1s also provlded with a way 40 extending at right angles to the ways 38 and 39 between its side walls. Locking bars 41 and 42 having similar scales 43'and 44, respectively marked thereon in corresponding positions are slidable along the inner surface of the lower portions of the carrying plate 33 and are provided with reduced extensions 41 and 42 arranged to enter and being movable along the ways 38 and 39, respectively. Stop pins 45 and 46, movable in guide slots 47 and 48 through the bottom walls of the ways 38 and 39, respectively, determine the extent of movement of the locking members 41 and 42.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The detents 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32 are disposed within the transverse way 40 when the hereinbefore described parts of the device are in assembled condition, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Coil springs 49 and 50 disposed in sockets 51 and 52 in the under surfaces of the extensions 41 and 42, respectively, press against the bottoms of the ways 38 and 39, respectively, to occasion the frictional engagement of the extensions with the shutter 23 and thereby prevent free movement of the locking members 41 and 42 and of the shutter 23, although permitting movement means of screws 55 and are provided with shank portions 56 and 57 slidably disposed in slots 58 and 59, respectively, through the carrying plate 33, such shanks being provided with heads 60 and 61 serving to prevent withdrawal of the shanks from the slots 58 and 59 when the locking bars 41 and 42 are in the positions shown in Fig. 4, but to permit withdrawal of the shank and heads through said slots and the consequent displacement of the members 41 and 42 for any reason whatsoever when the extensions 41 and 42 are lifted from the ways 38 and. 39 and rotated approximately 90 in opposite directions. The extensions 41 and 42, respectively, are provided with trans-' verse slots 62 and 63, and these slots each have a depth and a width equal to the depth and width of the way 40. It will thus be seen that when the locking members 41 and 42 are moved until the slots 62 and 63 register with the way 40, that the shutter 23 can be moved at will between the walls 9 and 10, since all the detents 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32 are disposed in the way 40. The key-hole 24 can then be moved into registration with the keyhole 18 and a key inserted therethrough into the lock 1 to operate the same in an ordinary manner. When the key-hole 24 registers with the keyhole 18, the extension 41 will be movable along the guide-way 38 between the detents 30 and 31 and the extension 42 will be movthe detents 31 and 32, while the extension 42" will be movable along the way 39 between the detents 29 and 30. It will thus be seen that it is necessary to adjust the locking members 41 and 42 in a certain position indicated by the scales 43 and 44, so that the slots 62 and 63 register with the way 40 before the shutter 23 can be moved until the key-hole 24 registers with the key-hole 18 and when this has been accomplished it is necessary that the locking members 4] and 42 be maintained in the relation men=- tioned in order that the shutter can be moved into the position illustrated in Fi 5. Obviously, the combination can be changed by changing the relative positions of the slots 62 and 63 in the extensions 4]. and 42. The casing 7 is secured in position by means of screws 64 that are projected through the door 3 from the inner side thereof into threaded engagement with openings 65 in the casing 7 and consequently the device cannot be readily removed by any person not posesessing the combination who is seeking to unlock the lock 2.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a door look, a casing secured to said door lock, said casing being formed with a key-hole registering with the keyhole of said lock, transverse guide members secured to the inner side of said casing at opposite sides of said key-hole to provide a guide-way,a shutter slidable in said guideway and being formed with a key-hole positioned to register with the key-hole in said casing when said shutter is in an adjusted position relative the casing, a plurality of spaced apart alined detents carried by said shutter and extending laterally thereof, a carrying plate secured in adjusted position between said casing and said lock, said carrying plate being provided with a pair of spaced apart parallel ways in its surface contiguous said shutter and with another way extending at right angles to said first named ways and being positioned to receive said detents, and a pair of locking bolts each having a series of characters marked thereon, said locking bolts being slidably disposed in said first named ways, each bolt being formed with a transverse slot in the surface thereof contiguous the shutter in position to register with said last named way when said locking bolts are in adjusted positions, whereby said detents are moved along said last named Way when said shutter is moved to bring the key-hole through he shutter into or out of registration with said first named key-hole.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a door look, a casing secured to said door lock, said casing being formed with a key-hole registering with the keyhole of said lock, transverse guide members secured to the inner side of said casing at opposite sides of said key-hole to provide a guide-way, a shutter slidable in said guideway and being formed with a key-hole positioned to register with the key-hole in said casing when said shutter is in an adj usted position relative the casing, a plurality of spaced apart alined detents carried by said shutter and extending laterally thereof, a carrying plate secured in adjusted position between said casing and said lock, said carrying plate being provided with a pair of spaced apart parallel ways in its surface contiguous said shutter and with another way being positioned to receive said detents, a pair of locking bolts each having a series of characters marked thereon, said locking bolts being slidably disposed in said firstnamed ways, each being formed with a transverse slot in the surface contiguous-the shutter in position to register with said lastnamed way when said locking bolts are in adjusted positions, whereby said detents are moved along said last-named way when said shutter is moved to bring the key-hole through the shutter into or out of registration with said first-named key-hole, and means extending exterior the casing for operating the shutter.
3. In a device of the character described, a lock, a casing secured to said lock and provided with a key-hole registering with the key-hole of the look, a shutter having a key-hole opening therethrough, means for movably supporting the shutter contiguous to the wall of the casing so that the keyhole therethrough may be positioned selec tively in registry with the key-hole through the casing and out of registry therewith, a carrier plate secured within the casing, locking members carried by said shutter and other locking members movably supported by said carrier plate and co-acting with the first named locking members to control the operation of the shutter, and means connecting with the shutter and extending exteriorly of the casing for moving the shutter when the locking members carried by said shutter and the locking members supported by said carrier plate are in adjusted relative positions.
