Speeiication of Letters Patent. Patentd May 31, 1921 l Application tiled August 5, 1919. Serial No. 315,462.
Tf1-all whom it' may concern.'
'B'e it known thatI, MAURICE BLUMEN- THAL, residingin Brooklyn, inA the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Mats, of which the following is a specificatie l This invention relates to a 'chair mat.
The object of the invention is to, provide a -mat upon which a chair may be easily moved to and fro, one which will be simple and attractive in appearance, which may be manufactured at small cost, and one which will be durable and eflicient.
In moving a ,chair back and forth over a polished floor the floor'ordinarily sustains considerable injury due to the rubbing or rolling of the chair legs about in the samelocality upon the ioor. The feet of a person occupying the chair also causes injury to the floor.
If the Hoor be covered by a carpet then the carpet receives the injury. Where carpet is present the softness of the pile of the carpet makes movement ofthe chairmore or less difficult and annoying.
It is an object of this invention, therefore,
- to provide a mat which may be laid upon any type of floor, either carpeted or otherwise, and whiclrwill receive all of the wear from the chair legs and from the feet of a person occupying the chair, and which will thorou hly protect the licor and at the same time a low ample freedom of movement of the chair.
v A further object isv to provide a' matl which is reversible end forend so that different portions of the mat may be used at dierent times for receiving the major part of the wear both from the chair and from the users feet.
A further object is to provide a mat including prepared localities or'tracks for receiving the chair legs and along which the chair may be' move with minimum resistance.
A further object is to providea mat in which the mentioned prepared localities lare adjustable relative to each other for accommodating chair legs of diiferent dimens1ons. l
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part -obvious and in part pointed out inthe course of-the following description ofthe elements, combinations, arrangements of parts, ;and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
, In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form ofl embodiment of the invention tionand illustrated as in use:
Flg. 2 -1s a top plan view of the mat shown in F1g. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional upon the i plane f Figure l a perspective view of a mat y -constructed 1n accordance with this invensite longitudinaledges of the bed plate are a pair of adjustable track members G. Thesealso are preferabl formed from sheet metal and provide relatlvely depressed portions longitudinally -thereof providing the 'tracks ll along which the casters 2, or the like, upon the chair legs, are :adapted to move. The side walls, as 3, of the tracks are sufficiently deep and steep to prevent sey unintentional displacement of thev casters 2 v from the tracks.
Since, of coursethe distance between the legs of diH'erent chairs may vary to some extent, it is desirablev that the tracks l be Aadjustable toward and away Vfrom each other so as properly to receive the casters 2. As a simple expedient for providin the desired adjustability the members have their outer longitudinal edges turned back, as at 4,' and received beneath the longi' tudinal marginal edge portions 5 of the bed plate L. Spacing'blocks 6 are arranged between'the main or upper' portions 7 of the members G and the ad'acent upper surfaces or the portions 5, an clam ing screws, or the like, as 8 are arrangedp for clamping the portions 5 between the spacing blocks 6 and the portions 4. The screws 8 are received within slots 9 formed in the portions 5 of the bed plate extending in a direction transversely of the bed plate.
lWhen it is desired to adjust the tracks it is simply necessary to loosen the screws 8, move the tracks along the slots 9 and then retighten the screws. The screws are disposed so that their heads open through the portions 7 of the tracks where they may be easily reached with a screw driver.
Between the two track members G and upon the upper surface of the bed plate is arranged a filter member H. This may consist of a rectangular piece of linoleum or other suitable material, or its upper surface may be covered by a piece of carpet or the like. Its opposite longitudinal edges are received beneath longitudinal Aflanges 10 formed upon the track members G and suiiicient space, as 11, is left for accommodating adjustment of the tracks. rThe flanges 10 serve as clamp means engaging the filler for retaining the iller against displacement while the screws 8 are screwed home. The filler H is intended to receive the wear particularly from the users feet, while at the same time lending warmth and attractiveness to the whole device. It may be readily removed and replaced whenever desired by simple manipulation of the screws 8.
rlhe opposite ends of the mat may be conveniently finished od by metallic binder strips 12, the same being disposed ttor closing tle ends of the tracks 1 so as to prevent unintentional movement of the chair longitudinally out of the ends of the tracks.
lt will thus termediate or body portion of theA mat may be made soft and inviting to the feet of the user, yet the portions of the mat with which the chair legs engage, namely the tracks 1, are hard and inexible so that the chair legs are freely movable therealong. The side walls of the tracks are likewise hard and indexible s o that engagement oit the chair legs or casters therewith will not imede the movements of the chair.
All of the metal parts, ot course, may be suitably painted, or otherwise ornamented, according to preference.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined 'in the lowing claims, it is intended that all matter be seen thatv while the in-` Lampes contained in the'above description or shown in theaccompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new .and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A chair mat comprising a bed plate, track members overlying the bed plate at opposite longitudinal edges thereof, a filler overlying the bed plate between safid track members, and means slidably connecting the track members with the bed plate whereby said track members are adjustable upon the bed plate.
2. A chair mat comprising a pair of track members spaced apart, each having relatively raised portions and relatively depressed track portions, and a filler member interposed between said track members connected thereto having its upper surface disposed substantially level with the raised portions of the track members.
3. A chair mat comprising a pair of separate track members each being formed from sheet metal, said sheet metal being bent to form relatively raised portions and relatively depressed portions, a filler extending between said track members having its edge portions extending beneath and in engagement with under surfaces of the relatively raised portions of said track members so .that the upper surface of the filler stands substantially in the plane of the relatively raised portions of the track members, and means adjustable to hold said track members imposition lapping a greater or less portion of the ller as desired, for the purpose set forth.
4c. A chair mat comprising a bed plate, track members at opposite edges of said bed plate, means whereby said track members are slidably connected with the bed plateand ada ted to hold the track members at any se ected distance apart, a filler mounted upon the bed plate intermediate said track members, and the track members having parts serving as clamps by which to hold the filler in position.
1intestimony whereof l hereby affix my signature' in the presence of two witnesses.
