ISAAC WAGEMAKER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
Application filed November 9, 1921.
j T all whom it may concern:
e it known that I, ISAAC \VAGEMAKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Pads or Coverings for Desks, Tables, and the like; lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to a desk, table, stand or like pad or top adapted to be placed on the upper side of the top of a desk, table, stand or the like and so constructed that it more or less adheres thereto so that it will not easily change position. remains flat, does not warp or buckle or curl at the edges, and is especially durable by reason of its construction. The pad or top may be of a size to completelycover the desk. or table. or stand, or it may be of a smaller size so as to cover only a portion thereof. It is a primary object and purpose of the invention to make a device of this character in a very'simple and novel manner, chiefly of linoleum, though equivalent material may be used in the place thereof, and to produce a pad or top covering which is durable and efiicient and which will give years of service before becoming worn'. out or otherwise useless. Many other objects and purposes will appear as an understanding of the invention is had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete pad or top covering.
ig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing one corner portion thereof with' the border broken away to show the projecting tongues to which it is secured.
F 3 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical" sectlon through. the border and adjacent portions of the body of the pad, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of one corner portion of the pad before the border is attached.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
In the construction of the pad or top covering, a piece of linoleum 1, of the desired size is used, on its under side having the usual fabric 2 covering the entire under side of the upper linoleum materialand to which and I do hereby declare the fol-' Serial No. 513,904.
'aid material is inseparably attached. A like piece of linoleum 3 with a fabric 4 similarly covering its under side and inseparablyattached thereto is placed in inverted position under the first linoleum member, the two fabrics 2 and 4 coming together and the same are glued or otherwise permanently cemented together. This makes a double thickness of linoleum with a fabric center strata between the upper and lower sides thereof.
The upper section 1 of the linoleum is cut away at its edges back a short distance and parallel to its edges and downwardly substantially half way through the linoleum, leaving a projecting portion 5 of the linoleum entirely around the piece. Similarly the lower piece or section 3 is cut to leave a projecting portion 6, the parts 5 and 6 with the edge portions of the glued fabrics 2 and 4 between them forming projecting tongues which extend entirely around the body of linoleum. By reason of the fabric reinforce located centrally in the tongues, such tongues are held from crumbling or breaking, a very strong construction being made. While I have described the body as made of two sections of linoleum placed fabric sides together and the fabrics glued securely, it is to be understood that the provision of a body of linoleum made by the placing of a fabric center between linoleum material above and below the fabric is the same in effect and my invention comprehends such construction.
Border or edging strips 7, preferably of ,rubber, though they maybe of any suitable material are used to finish the pad, the strips being grooved on their inner sides for the reception of the tongues. The strips are secured by gluing or otherwise securely cementing the same to the tongues. The strips 7 are of a thickness equal to the combined thicknesses of the two linoleum members 1 and 3 and the fabric pieces 2 and 4 between them so that the upper and lower sides of the strips lie flush with the upper and lower sides of the linoleum pieces 1 It is obvious that both sides of the pad have a finished linoleum surface and that either side may be placedagainst the desk, table or stand top. Linoleum, having a smooth, somewhat oily feeling surface, when brought into "contact with the smooth top of a desk or like etrlietu ie adheres thereto llllt'l sufficiently adhere thereto.
that it is not easily moved from position and will not change position from pressure or strain thereon such as comes from ordinary use of the pad on a desk or like article of furniture having a top on which the pad or covering may be placed.
The pad may be made of a size to entirely cover a desk top or the like, or it may be made smaller to cover only a portion thereof. VVhenused to cover the entire topof a desk, it gives the effect of a linoleum covered or topped desk and is free of the disadvantages which inlaid linoleum desk tops have, such as the buckling or curling of the edges, occurring from moisture coming from underneath in contactwith the linoleum. Also by reason of the equal strength of the linoleum material on each side of the central fabric strata, no warping, buckling or curling in the mat or pad occurs, the pad or mat lying perfectly fiat at all times on the desk or other top where it is placed so as to closely While I have shown the pad with a border, which is of value from a finish and appearance standpoint, the salient feature of the invention resides in the provision of the body of linoleum with a fabric reinforce between its upper and lower sides. And it is obvious that the use of t e linoleum with such inner fabric reinforce is not limited to desk and table or stand coverings but may be used many other ways. The covering is very durable, can be easily made and presents an attractive appearance. The
appended claims define the invention and I consider myself entitled to all forms of construction coming within their scope.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a body of linoleum having a centrally positioned fabric located between the upper and lower sides of the body, said body having projecting tongues at its edges including the edges of the fabric and port-ions of the linoleum material, and border strips having grooved inner sides located around the body, the tongues on the body entering the grooves in the border strips.
2. A construction of the class described, comprising two sections of linoleum having fabric faces at one side thereof placed together and glued inseparably together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ISAAC WAGEMAKER.
