Description
' following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the' invention, such as w1ll enable' -.uNIT'E'DQsTArEs j ALPHONSEALY; oF-sr. oAsIMIn;v on'nisncjoanana;
i 'HINGEu To all whom t may camera: w
Be it known that I, ALrHoN'sn ALARY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at St. Casimir, Portneuf county, .Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new andf VIuseful Imfprovem'ents V1n Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
The present invention relates to hmges for doors and the like, and an object of the i present invention is to provide a hinge 'of a simple and strong construction that maybe readily applied to any door and which'willi hold the door in opened or closed position.
With the above and 'other objects in 'vievv which w'ill hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation'of parts as Vwill be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended olaim.
In the accompanying drawingsv has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, Vit being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details 'herein exhibited, but the right is hereby' reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efliciency of the same. In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door having the hinge applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a detail section through the upperend' of the door and the door casing;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail view of one portion of the hinge; f F'g. 4 is a similar view of the lower portion of the hinge;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the hinge lwhen trated in. Figs. 6 and 7, omprise two sec- *specification of Iettersatent.
doorway and supportedV within the door caslng 5. The upper hinge 6 as shownin Fig. w
, edge a recess 15. When the door` is mounted wlthin the door casing thesleeve 9 exrides upon the incline 14 and if the door be i released it will readily close due to this contion secured to the door. These hinges support the door and permit the same to' be readilyl opened or closed. i
The purpose of 'the present inventionis' to improve this class of hinges so'that thel l doormay be retained in its opened or closed i posltions.
The door asiherein shownv indicated by the'numeral 4 is seated withinlth'e 1 may be' of the construction as shown in F igs.6 and 7, but the lower hinge 7 is made i inv accordance with the lpresent invention. Th1s hlnge comprlses two. sectlons one of secured Vto the door and formed with this plate is avsleevel 9 having its upper end A closed. The other section ofthis hinge comprises a plate 10 which is secured to the door casing by means of the set screws or any other suitable fastening membersand is protends over the stub shaft 13 and the roller 12 rides upon the lower edge of this sleeve. VVhen the door is being opened this roller 12 struction, as the roller 12 normally assumes the position as shown in dottedlines in FigiV 73 and when in this position the door is closed. When the door is swung open until 100 it makes va quarter turnthe roller 12 will be seated within'the recess 15 whereby the` door will be retained in this opened position, As the door is 'swung open it will Vhave a tendency to rise'and the lower edge of the 105 sleeve l9 rides uponV the roller 12 and to facilitate'the opening of the door the upper edge thereof is cutl away as indicated by the numeral16, so that as the door is being opened it may rise and vpass by the door 110 which consists of 'a plate 8 adapted to be casing due to this cut away portion. Theresubstantially rectengular formation, a projection formed upon the outer edge of the lower plate at the upper Vend thereof, a stub' shaft formed integral on the outer edge of said proj ection, a slot extending transversely therein,'2J roller journaled in said slot having its outer periphery extending above the edge ofseid projection, a sleeve formed at described comorisinof an u er and lower late each of a l z: PP P the lower end Vof the upper plate on .thc outer edge thereof and adapted to receive said stub shaft,psd sleeve heving its upper end closed and its lower edge adepted to rotete over said roller, said lower edge being inclined upwardly toward the plate wherebythe door will normally swing closed by its own weight and recesses formed on said lower edge of the sleeve diametrcally opposite thereon for engagement with said rollerV and adapted to secure the door in e11 open or closed position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
' i ALPHONSE ALARY.
