Application filed January 28, 1926. Serial No. 84,339.
My invention relates to door fasteners and has for its principal object to provide a device of this character especially adapted for use on doors not latch and which closed position.
A further object is to provide means operable by the door knob for releasing the apparent from the following detailed description when viewed together with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of a door to which my invention is shown attached.
' I Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view i1lusposition of the gripping trading the relative to the other features of jaws with respect the device.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a section taken on a line 44:-
of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the aw supporting bracket and u Figure 6 is a longitudmal sect onal view of one of the jaw members and showmg the position of the friction block.
Referring now to'the drawings it wlll be seen that I have disclosed my invention as comprising a bracket 5 secured to the outside of a door 6 along the upper edge thereof. Said bracket includes a horizontal shelf 7 having an upturned outer flange 8 and a rib 9 struck up therefrom, each being provided with an aligned openinglO near one end. A jaw 11 isdisposed upon said shelf having side flanges 12' which are arranged to extend downwardly on the outside of the flange and rib on said shelf. The flanges 12 also have an aligned opening and a pin 13 is provided for inserting in said openings whereby to form a pivoted connection between the jaw and the shelf.
The jaw and the shelf are also provided with an aligned opening through which a bolt 14 is vertically disposed and upon the lower end thereof I provide a spiral spring 15 which has its upper end bearing against provided with a retaining will normally secure the door against movement in either an open or causing the jaw to open. The
the under side of end secured by a nut 16. Thus the jaw is normally held downwardly upon the shelf.
A lever 17 is provided having one end 18 bent substantially at right angles thereto and which end is inserted transversely between the jaw and the shelf, notches 19 being formed on the flanges carried thereon for clearance within which the bent portion of the lever is adapted to rest, and the end thereof is fitted in an opening provided in a up from the shelf.
A semi-circular arm 24 formed of thin metal is attached at one end to the outside of the house adjacent the door frame and the other end is attached to the top of the door frame immediately above the outer end of the jaw so that the arm tween the jaw and the of the arm being similar by the jaw as the door closed. a
A pair of friction blocks 25, preferably of hard of the jaw and shelf, and arranged to engage the upper and lower faces of said arm. Lugs 26 struck shelf provide means for retaining shelf, the curvature to the curve defined is swung open or the blocks said shelf and its lower section 21 the recess ay be received bei wood, are secured within the ends up from the jaw and the 1n position. The tension of the spring normally serves to pull the block carried by the jaw downwardly against the arm so that the doorv will be held immovable. How-evenit is apparent that anyone desiring to open the door by turning the knob will operate the lever tomove the jaw upwardly and lift the arm travels between the block away from the arm so that the door may be opened or closed. The block secured to the shelf is disposed beneath the arm so that. in opening or closing the door the blocks.
I claim:
1..A'door fastener comprising a bracket, means for securing said bracket at the top w of a door, a shelf formed on said bracket,
a shelf, a jaw, downwardly fformed thereon, means engaging said flanges means for securing said flanges formed on said extending flanges upwardly extending for pivotally mounting said jaw on said shelf, a semi-c rcular arm secured ad acent said door and disposed between the open end of said-jaw and said normally securing said lever having one end carried jaw and said shelf and means connecting the other end ofsaidleverto the door knob.
2. A door fastener comprising a bracket, bracket at the top of a door, a shelf formed upwardly extending flanges shelf, spring means for aw to sa d arm, a
formed on said shelf, a jaw, downwardly extending flanges formed thereon, means engaging said flanges for pivotally mountlng sa d aw on said shelf, a semi-circular arm secured ad acent said doorand disposed between the open end 7 a lever having one end upwardly extending of said jaw and for normally securing formed thereon, means engaging said flanges.
,for pivotally mounting sald' jaw on said between said on said bracket,
shelf, a semicircular arm secured adjacent said door anddisposed between the open end ofcsaid jaw and said shelf, friction blocks secured to said jaw and said shelf and arranged to engage opposite sides of said arm, spring means for normally securing said j'awto said arm, a lever having one end disposed between said jaw and said shelf, and
having an upwardly inclined crook engaging said jaw and means connecting the other end of said lever to the door knob as and for the purposes set forth.
4:. A door fastener comprising a bracket,
the same to a bracket, a j aw pivotally mounted, at one end on said shelf, a semicircular arm secured to the door frame, and disposed between theopenend of said jaw and said shelf, resilient means for normally closing the jaw upon the arm and means whereby to release said jaw from' said arm.
5. A door fastener comprising a'bracket, ieans for securing the same to a: door, a shelf formed on said bracket, a jaw pivotally mounted at one end on said shelf,
means for securing shelf formed on said disposed between the open end of said jaw and said shelf, resilient closing means for the jaw and a lever ,pivotally mounted on said shelf and operatively arranged for releasing said jaw.- s
6. A door fastener comprising abracket, means for securing the same to a door, a
shelfformed on said bracket, a jaw pivotally mounted at one end on said shelf, a semicircular arm secured to the door frame and disposed between the open end of said jaw and said shelf, resilient closing means for the jaw and a lever having ing transversely between the'sh'elf and the jaw and provided. ,,with an offset arranged for opening said jaw vand its opposite end operatively connected to the door knob.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
HALVOR n. ANDERSON.
