APPLICATION FILED 1AN.3I. 1919.

I SAMUEL ROCHLIS, 0F EEIILADELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ASH-CART COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1921.
Application filed January 31, 1919. Serial No. 274,205.
T 0 all who-melt may concern.
Be it known that I, SAnUnL Iloorrms, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of I hiladel phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Ash-Cart Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ail-improvement in the construction of ash cart covers of the character of that shown in Letters Patent No. 1,294,708, issued to me February 18,
' 1919, and it has for its object to provide an improvement in the construction whereby the cover members may be readily placed in position and removed, if desired, for any purpose.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of double channel member at the center of the length of the cart by means of which the inner, opposed ends of the adjustable cover members for covering the top of the body of the cart are supported.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be referred to and pointed out in the detailed description of the invention which follows or will be apparent from such description.
In order that my invention may be more readily understood and its practical advantages appreciated, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated one convenient form of embodiment thereof. It will understood however that changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
In the drawing Figure l is a central, longitudinal, sectional view of the central portion of the top or cover of a cart or wagon body;
Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional view of a central portion of the same taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse, sectional view extending entirely across the top or cover and showing the upper edge portions of the sides of the body, the said view being taken along substantially the same line as that of the line 2- 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing :1 and 2 designate angle members having their upwardly extending flanges placed in parallel opposing relation with respect to each other and secured together, the said upwardly extending flanges being spaced from each other as shown. In the construction as shown, these angle members are connected each other by means of plates 3, 4 and 5. the respect ve plates are secured to the horizontal flanges of the angles 1 and 2 by means or rivets 6 as shown.- If preferred or desired, however, other or additional means for connecting the angle plates together may be employed. 8 designates a plate winch is bent as shown in the drawing and restsegamst the upper edges of the up wardly extending flanges of the angles 1 2nd 2, as is quite clearly shown in Fig. 1.
5.1118 plate forms Wll'll the two angle members, 1 and 2, a double channel member, one channel being to the right of the upwardly extending flange of the angle iron 1 and the other channel being to the left of the upwardly extending flange of the angle iron 2. The plate 8 is secured to the angle irons by means of bolts 10 which extend through the space between the angle irons 1 and 2. The inner ends of these bolts are screw threaded as shown for the reception of nuts and washors 11 by means of which the bolts are ti htened and secured in place to hold the pla ts 8 n fixed relation with respect to the angle irons 1 and 2.
The angle irons are secured at their oppo- SILG endsto the upwardly extending flanges of angle irons 15, the downwardly extending flange of which is secured to the outwardly flared upper edge portions 16 of the body of the cart or wagon. The opposing inner edge portions of the adjustable covers 17, 18, 19 and 20 are supported within the channels of the double channel member consisting of the angle members 1 and 2 and the plate 8 secured together in the manner above descr1bed. The front and rear ends of these plates 17, 18, 19 and 20 are supported upon channel irons or members at the front and rear ends of the cart or wagon body. These are not shown, however, because they constituteno part of. the present invention. It will be understood that the cover plates 17, 18, 19 and 20 are slid or adjusted to diflerent positions so as to open or close the same. In the construction of the top or cover, the cover plates or doors 17 18, 19 and 20 may be placed in position with their front and rear ends in the channels by means of which they are supported and with the inner ends thereof supported upon the lower oppositely extending horizontal flanges of the angle members 1 and 2. After having been thus plates may be removed.
placed in position, the plate 8 may be placed in position and securedby means of the bolts 10. It will be seen that I have thus produced a permanent unitary structure.
If it should be desired, however, to remove the cover plates 17 18, 19 and 20, this may be done quickly and readily by unscrewing the nuts 11 from the bolts 10, removing the latter and then lifting the plate 8 from its position upon the upper edges of the upwardly extending flanges of the angle irons 1 and 2. When this has been done, the cover This may be desir able for the purpose of making repairs, or it may be that it might be desired to use the cartor wagon body without the presence of such cover plates.
I claim:
1. In a cart or wagon body top, the combination of a channel member comprising angle irons having vertically positioned flanges arranged in parallel relation and secured together in spaced relation with respect to each other, the other flanges of said angle irons extending horizontally in opposite directions, a plate seated against the upper edges of the said flanges in paral: lel relation to the said horizontal flanges of said angle irons, means for detachably securing the said plate to the said angle irons, and cover plates partially supported by the channels formed by the said angle irons and plate. c.
2. A double channel member comprising two angle irons having flanges arranged in parallel relation with respect to each other,
spaced relation with respect to each other, a plate seated against the edges of said parallel spaced flanges, and means for detachably securing said plate to said angle irons, substantially as described.
3. In a cart or wagon body cover, the combination of angle irons having flanges arranged vertically in parallel spaced relation to each other, a plate detachably secured against the edges of the parallel flanges of said angle irons, and in parallel relation to the other flanges of said angle irons, bolts situated at intervals and extending through said plate and through the space between said vertical flanges for detachably securing said plate to said angle irons, and adjustable cover plates having their inner opposing ends supported within the channels of said channel member, substantially as described.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of January, A. D., 1919. 7
SAMUEL ROQl-ILIS.
