A mi mam-umaamm/c ca N.X (03.9mm? PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID FRANK, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-WRENCHES.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 137,908, dated April 15, 1873; application filed March 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID FRANK, of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monkey- Wrenches and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of awrench with movable jaw, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referringto the annexed drawing, which represents a side view, part in section, of my invention.
A represents the shank or stem, provided with the jaw B on its outer end, and the other end secured in or formed with a handle, 0. On the stem or shank A is a sliding frame, D, in which the movable jaw E is firmly secured by pins a a, and in this frame is mounted a toothed wheel, G. This wheel gears with similar teeth formed in a groove on the shank or stem A. In the lower part of the frame D is pivoted a lever or thumb piece, H, which has on its upper end two pivoted arms, a, a,
through which passes a short shaft, 12, the ends of said shaft extending through slots in the frame D. On this shaft b, between the arms d d, is mounted another toothed wheel, G,
which gears both with the toothed stem or shank and with the wheel Gr, when a spring, I, which forms the back of the frame D, is allowed to operate on the lever H.
It will readily be seen that when the wheel G is in the position shown in the drawing, the frame D with the jaw E can not move on the shank A, as the teeth of the twowheels G G bind on each other but by pressing down upon the lever or thumb piece H, the wheel G is drawn away from the wheel G, and the slid ing frame and jaw can be moved up or down, as desired.' As soon as the thumb is removed from the lever H the spring I throws the wheel G in gear again with the wheel G, and
the movable jaw is held in the position where it was set. h
Having thus fully described my invention,
--what I claim as new, and desire to secure By Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the toothed shank A with jaw B, and the sliding case D with jaw E, of the stationary revolving pinion G and the movable revolving pinion G, as and for the purposes herein set forth. I 2. The combination of the lever H, arms d d carrying the pinion G, and the spring I for moving the pinion G up and down in the sliding case D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of February, 1873.
DAVID FRANK. Witnesses SAML. J. BROBST, THEOPHILUS SNYDER.
