LEWIS MARION PRATT, or inseam, KAnsAs, nssrenoajor (inn-Hair To Roy Assam MEDIJIN, or ELnonAno, KANSAS. I
CATCH FOR SCREEN-DOORS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 1,
Be it known that 1, Lewis M. PRATT, a
I citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Catch for Screen-Doors and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a catch especially designed for use in connection with screen doors and the like, one of the objects of the invention being to )rovide a simple, durable and efficient device which can be applied readily to a screen door or similar structure and which will hold the door in shut position and also allow it to be opened readily by the application of sufhcient pressure thereto. i I
1 A further object is to provide a structure 7 of this character which is cheap to n1anufacture and will not readily get out of order.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
7 In said drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of'one edge of a door and showing the catch connected thereto.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1, and showing the keeper engaged by the catch.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3+3, Fig. 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates a'portion of a door structure having a recess a formed in one edge thereof and B designates a portion of a door casing having a recess b formed therein. A stride plate 1 is'secured to the door frame 13 and has a longitudinal slot 2 therein. Secured to the door Afis a face plate 3 having a circular opening l therein and secured to the back face of this plate 3 so as to be supported freely within the open- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1921 1920. 7 Serial No. 378,265.
mg a is a spring strip 5 having a circular opening 6. A ball 7 projects into the opening 6 and also into the opening 4, the diameters of both these openings being less than the greatest diameter of the ball so that said ball will be pressed normally against the wall of the opening by the spring strip 5. When the ball 7 is thus located it projects beyond the face plate 3 and into the path of the strike plate 1. Thus it will be seen that when the door A is swung to closed position, the ball '7 will come against the strike plate 1 and be pushed backwardly into the recess 7 plate 1, the spring 5 will press the ball into a said openin so that the door'owill beheld in closed positlo'n. lVhen it is desired to open the door it is merely necessary to pull or i I push upon it with sufficient force to cause the ball 7 to be deflected out of the opening 2 and back against the spring strip 5 a sufficient distance to allow the door to shift out of closed position.
It will be seen that the device is very simple, compact and durable, is cheap to manufacture, and can be attachedreadily to a door. 7
What is claimedis:
The combination with a strike plate having an elongated opening therein, there being a recess back of the strike plate, of a door having a recess extending longitudinally within one edge thereof, a face plate extending across the recess and having a circular opening therein, said opening, when the door is closed, being in register with a portion of the elongated opening in the strike plate, an elongated spring strip within the recess and secured at one end to the face plate, said spring having a circular opening in the free end portion thereof, and a ball of a diameter greater than the diameters of the openings in the face plate and in the spring, said ball being norma 1y clamped between the face plate and the spring and with a portion thereof projected through the opening inthe face plate for engagement in the opening in the strike plate, said ball having a rolling contact with the strike as m own, I have hereto afiixed my signaplate during the movement of the door to ture 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
open or closed position the s rin being extended longitudinally along lihes extend- LEWIS MARION PRATT 5 ing across the lane of rotation of the door Witnesses:
during such r0 ling contact. JOHN F. LEE,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I. J. QUINN.
