UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARGAND GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13,789, dated November 13, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. JOHNSON, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Argand Gas-Burner; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 represents an external elevation, and .Fig. 2 a vertical and central section, of one of my improved burners.
The common Argand gas-burner is subject to more or less flickering or unsteadiness of flame, which it has been the object of my invention to prevent. I have also had in view the application of a gas purifier and distributer to an Argand gas-burner and to so improve said distributer as to prevent the coaltar or liquid residuum generally found in the said distributer after it has been some time in use from flowing down upon the seat of the distributer, so as to stop the gas-inlet holes thereof or be productive of other injurious effects. A gas distributer and purifier to which I refer is similar to such as will be found described in Letters Patent granted to me on the 26th day of June, A. D. 1855.
In carrying out my invention I form the Argand gas-burner A (see Figs. 1 and 2) with a hollow cone B, extending upward from the bottom of the inner air-chamber O of the burner, and so as to be surrounded by the air inlets 0r ports D D D, through which the air is supplied to said chamber. To the apex of such conea rod E is extended and made bulbshaped at its upper end,as seen in the drawings. The cone B,.I make hollow or with a chamber F for the reception of a conical gas-distributer II and its purifier I, which I arrange directly over a convex seat or base K, elevated on the bottom L of the gas-burner and having an inlet gas-passage a through its middle, as seen in Fig. 2. To the lower part of the conical gas-distributor I apply a flange or annulus b, which I arrange as seen in Fig. 2, and so as to form a spout or channel 0 c, extend ing around between it and the inner surface of the gas-distributer, the same being for the purpose of catching and retaining the coal-tar or liquid deposit which, when the distributor is in use, collects on the inner surface, and without the flange being attached thereto would be likely to flow down upon the convex seat hereinbefore mentioned, in which case there is danger of stoppage of the inletpassage of said seat.
In a common Argand gas-burner as usually constructed the impingement against one another of the currents of air which flow into its inner chamber produces an unsteadiness of the flame. By providing said chamber with a cone elevated above its bottom and arranged with respect to its air-induction openings, as specified, the entering currents of air when the burner is inflamed are directed upward,
so as to prevent in a great measure, if not entirely, the disturbance or flickering of the flame, which is otherwise likely to take place. By means of the bulb-shaped rod elevated on the cone or deflector the current is entirely prevented from attaining a whirling motion and the flame is spread a little, so as to improve or increase its light-giving surface.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. Making the distributor with a catch lip or flange or spout extending around its bottom, in manner and for the purpose hereinbefore described.
2. Combining with the Argand burner the conical deflector or the cone and its exterior rod and bulb, the same being arranged in the middle of the air-chamber of the burner, and for the purpose as hereinbefore set forth.
