APPLICATION FILED MAR. I8. 1920.

l wasnmmonma. 1,378,925. Specioation of Letters Patent.
Application nled March 18, 1920. Serial No. 366.771.
` To all 'whom it concern:
Be it` known that I, HARRY WAYNE Wnrra, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention isan improvement in washi :having a sediment collecting means in the form of a hopper bottom and a perforate plate above tlie bottom for supporting the clothes out of contact therewith together with a detachable receptacle below the bottom and to which the bottom delivers, the bottom having a baliie plate at the point of delivery.
funnel-shaped bottom at its connection with the body of the casing, and a baffle plate 5 in the formof a disk is supported above the opening 3 midway between the said opening: and the false bottom.
he plate 5, whichvis in the form of a disk, is supported by angle brackets 6 which are secured to the funnel-shaped bottom of the casing. Each of these brackets consists of a portion connected to the casing bottom 4by a bolt and nut 7 and a lateralir odset portion which is secured to the ba e plate by the rivet 8 8'. The baffle plate 5 1s spaced slightly above the bottom 2 of the machine casing 1, at its edges as 'will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 2, a suficient distance to permit the passage of sediment which is carried through the openings of the false bottom 4.
A receptacle is arranged below the bottom 2, the said receptacle consisting of an uper section 8 the form of a ring and a ower section 10 in the form of a cup. These sections have flanges 11 and 12, respectively, which lap upon each other and they are connected together by eye bolts 13, each of these bolts has its eye pivoted to a radial lug 14 on the lower section, and each eye bolt is adapted to be swung upwardly in re istering slots inthe flanges 11 and .12 an to be engaged by a wing nut to clamp the sections together.
The upper section 8 has a marginal Iiange 16 which fits against the lower face of the bottom 2 of the machine casing, and is secured thereto by rivets 17, as shown, and the joint at this point is a water-tight joint.
The lower section 10 has a drain outlet 18, which is controlled by a valve 19.
In operation, when the casing 1 is filled with water in the usual manner, the sediment receptacle 8-10 being also full of water, the clothes are supported on the false or false bottom 4. The sediment in the coll lecting basin 8-10 may be drawn of through the drain pipe 1 With reference to Fig. 1 it will be observed that sediment received within the receptacle 10 is not disturbed by the eddies which may be created in the receptacle 1 as the result of the operation of the agitator. In other mords movement of the water in the upper cleaning receptacle will not agitate the sediment trapped within the sediment receiving receptacle 10. B this means the sediment upon passing t rough the opening 3 enters the receptacle 10 and remains there undisturbed until completion of the washing operation,
I claim:
1. In a washing machine, the combination with a casing having a funnel-shaped bottom provided with a central opening, of a false perforate bottom for supporting the clothes arranged with the casing,'a sediment collectin basin to which the funnel-shaped above the opening in the funnel shaped botvided with a discharge opening, a baffle elbl tom, said collecting basin consisting of a sectendin Pover said opening in spaced relation tion fixed to the bottoxnof the caslng and a. to said ottom, and asedimentreceiving and 10 section 'detachably connected with the rsttrapping receptacle arranged beneath said. 5 named section. opening and having itsvupper end closed by 2. A washing machine comprising a resaid funnel shaped bottom. -ceptacle having a funnel shaped bottom pro- .HARRY WAYNE WHITE.
