VAS-NG MACHNE.
Application led October S, 1921. Serial No. 506,358.
To all fwiom i may concer/n Be it ltnown that L Hanny iV. 1iNnrrn, a citizen of the United States, and resident ot Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State ot Kansas, have invented certain new and usetul improvements in "ilVashing` Machines, ot which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to washing` inachines and is an improvement on the construction illustrated in my United States Patent #1,378,925.
An important object is to provide a washing; machine having dependingreceptacle or container which constitutes a sediment collector and which is separated from the main washing chamber by means ot' baiile plate and an annular base plate, the said baffle plate and the annular base plate constituting a means for maintaining the water and the dirt in the sediment collector in an unagitated state.
A further object is to provide a washing machine which is simple to operate. efficient in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will. be apparent d tiring); the course ot the *followingdescription.
ln the accompany/ingl drawing 'Forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the washing machine constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective of the baille member and closure for the sediment collector detached.
ln the drawingv the numeral 5 designates a receptacle adapted for the r ception ot clothes to be washed by the action of an agitator 6 and a cleaning' medium in the water.
As illustrated in Figure 1 the bottom 'T of the receptacle 5 is 'tunnel-shaped or slopes toward the center ot the receptacle and is provided with a depending integral cylindrical sediment receptacle or collector S. rlhe sediment collector S is preferably ot cylindrical formation and is provided with a drain pipe 9 having` a valve 10 by means of which sediment and the dirty water in the collector may be discharged.
rllhe receptacle is provided with a periorated tray 12 which constitutes a means for supporting the clothes ahove a combined -ll and enters the collector 8.
baille and closure 13. The combined baille and closure 18. is provided with an annular' pase plate 14 which flatly contacts with the funnel-shaped bottom i and extends' for a substantial distance into the sediment collector so as to prevent the operation of the agitator 6 irom agitating the water and the dirt in the collector 8. rl`hat is to say the inner edge portion of the annular base plate 14 partly closes the upper end of the sediment collector 8 and therefore maintains the water and the dirt in the sediment collector in an unagitated state. rlhe member 13 is provided with a depending cylindrical attaching flange 16 which is received within the collector 8 and is secured to the base plate between the inner and outer edges of the same.
A barlie plate or disk 18 is provided with a plurality of attaching arms 2() which eX- tend downwardly and are secured to the. upper side of the base plate lil. rlhe baffle disk or plate 18 is supported in spaced relation to the base plate 14 and thereby provides an annular passage between the dish 18 and the plate 1e so that the water may pass from the receptacle to the collector 8.
ln operation the desired quantity oi waterv and cleaningv medium is placed in the machine and when the clothes are also arranged in the machine the agitator 6 is set in motion. As the agitator removes the dirt from the clothes the dirt drops down through thel perforated tray 12 into the water in the collector 8 The dirt-laden water in the collector 8 is not subjected to the agitation to which the water in the receptacle 5 is subjected and therefore the dirt is allowed to settle. The dirt-laden water in the receptacle 5 passes downwardlj,7 between the baffle disk 18 and the base plate 1When desired the water may be drained oft from the collector 8 by opening the valve 10. By removing the disk or tray 12 the combined batlie and closure 13 may also be removed so as to aord full access to the collector l for the purpose of thoroughly cleaning the same.
l claim 1. el. washino machine comprising' ireceptacle having; a sloping' bottoni. pri'aridcd with a depending; intepral sedimci t col lector` and a comliined .lo-aline and csnie seated on said hottoin and iiavi initil l O lar base plate extended inwardly beyond the side wall of said sediment collector and constituting a means for partly closing the same, said'combined baille and closure also being provided with a baille member arranged in spaced relation to said annular base plate.
2. A. washing machine comprising a receptacle having a depending sediment collector, a combined baille and closure having an annular base plate extended inwardly beyond the side wall of said sediment collector and constituting a means for partly closing the same, said combined baille and closure also being provided with a baille disk arranged in spaced relation to said annular base plate, and a perforated tray arranged within saidreceptacle above said combined v baille and. closure.
3. A washino' machine com risino' a receptacle having a depending sediment collector, a combined ballle and closure seated on said bottom and liavingan annular' base plate extended inwardly beyond the side Wall of said sediment collector and constituting a means for partly closing,` the same,
said combined baille and closure also being provided with a baille disk arranged in spaced relation to said annular base plate and a drain' associated with said collector, said combined closure and baille being pro vided with a depending attaching member received in said collector.
d. A washing` machine comprising a receptacle having a bottom wall anda depending sediment collector, a combined baffle and closure detachably arranged within said receptacle and having an annular base platev and a depending annular attaching plate secured to said base plate between its edges and extending` into said collector, 4said combined baille and closure also being` provided with a baffle disk arranged in spaced relation to said base plate, said annular base plate being extended inwardly beyond the side wall of said collector and constituting a means for partly closing said collector, the inner edge of said annular base plate beingarranged inwardly of the periphery of said disk.
