C. B. SAMUELS.
MILK BOTTLE CARRIER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 9, 1920.

PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. SAMUEIJS, 01E TULSA, UKLAHjOM-A- MILK-BOTTLE CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 10, 1921.
Application filed September 9, 1920. Serial No. 409,089.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. SAMUnLs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tulsa, in the county of llulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Milk-Bottle Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efiicient means'for carrying milk bottles under conditions facilitating the engagement and disengagement thereof and designed particularly for the use of milk distributing or delivering agents; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carrier showing in dotted lines the arrangement of the milk bottle necks when engaged thereby.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the device with the jaws deflected in position for engagement with or release of the bottle necks.
Fig. 3 is an end view.
The apparatus consists essentially of a handle or grip 10 from which depend hangers 11 for supporting jaw members 12, said hangers being of looped construction, and the jaw members consisting of bars extended through the loops formed by the hangers and provided with terminal means for embracing and engaging the bottle neck indicated in dotted lines at 13 in Fig. 1. In the construction illustrated the bottle engaging means consist of curved, approximately semicircular jaws 14 formed by the terminals of the bars constituting the jaw members, and between the hangers the said jaw members are connected by a looped expansion leaf spring 15 havin a tendency to spread the jaw members an thus open the terminals thereof for the reception of the bottle necks.
Each hanger is provided in one side with a curved offset 16, the offsets being disposed in opposite relations and serving when the jaw members are moved upward with relation to the hangers to permit of the spreading of the bottle engaging elements through the action of the looped spring. At their lower ends the hangers are contracted to form seats 17 so that when the jaw members are depressed with relation to the hangers and are engaged by said seats they are held in a closed or folded relation in opposition to the tension of the expansion spring 15 so as to snugly embrace the bottle necks below the beads 13 thereof, and obviously when bottles are engaged by the jaw members the weight of the former serves to maintain the aw members in such depressed position in the hangers and preserve an effective engagement of the jaw members with the bottles, while the device is being supported by the grip or handle 10.
When the carrier is lowered to bring the bottom of the bottles into contact with the suppormg surface such as a table or the floor the downward pressure of the jaw members upon the shoulders of the bottles serves to move themupward relative to the hangers so as to permit of the expansion incident to the action of the spring, so that the bottles are released and the carrier may then be removed therefrom. On the other hand with one or the other of the jaw members deflected as shown in Fig. 2 which can be effected by a slight upward pressure upon one extremity of either of the jaw members, so as to permit of the spreading action of the spring, the device may be applied to bottles standing in an upright position upon a table or the floor, whereupon a slight clownward pressure upon the jaw members or a lifting action applied to the grip or handle, with the jaw elements beneath the beads at the upper edges of the bottle necks, will cause a downward movement of the jaw members and a consequent contraction thereof into eifectual engaging relation with the bottle necks.
To guard against accidental displacement of the jaw members with relation to the hangers it is preferable to provide each member with a guide pin 18 for engagement with a slot 19 in the adjacent hanger, said slot being preferably formed in that side of the hanger which is opposite to the offset 16 as will readily be seen by reference to Fig. 1.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A milk bottle carrier having a handle or grip provided with looped hangers, and separable jaw members slidingly mounted in said hangers and provided with bottle engaging elements, said hangers being provided at their lower ends with means for holding said jaw members in their bottle engaging relation.
2. A milk bottle carrier having a grip or handle provided with looped hangers, separable jaw members slidingly mounted in said hangers and provided with means for engaging interposed bottle necks, said hangers being provided at their lower ends with means for holding said jaw members in their bottle engaging relation and having offsets for permitting the separation of said members.
3. A milk bottle carrier having a grip or handle provided with looped hangers and spring repelled jaw members slidingly fitted in said hangers and provided with means for engaging interposed bottle necks, said hangers being provided at their lower ends with seats for holding the jaw members in their bottle engaging relation, and having above said seats offsets for permitting the separation of said members.
4. A milk bottle carrier having a grip or handle provided with looped hangers, jaw members slidingly fitted in said hangers and provided with means for engaging intel-posed bottle necks, and a looped expansion spring terminally connected to said jaw members at intermediate points thereof and tending to effect the separation thereof, said hangers being provided at intermediate points with offsets for permitting the separation of the aw members.
5. A milk bottle carrier having a grip or handle provided with looped hangers, jaw members slidingly fitted in said hangers and provided with means for engaging interposed bottle necks, and a looped expansion spring terminally connected to said jaw members at intermediate-points thereof and tending to effect the separation thereof, said hangers bein provided at intermediate points with 0 sets for permitting the separation of the jaw members, each of said jaw members being provided with a uide pin operating in a slot in one o the hangers.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
