BROOM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1d, 1921..
Application filed November 6, 1919. Serial No. 336,038.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBRosn S. RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellefonte, in the county of Center and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to brooms, and aims primarily to provide a noveland improved construction wherein the broom, brush, or mop head and handle are de tachable, whereby either one of them canbe replaced when worn out or damaged, and also providing for the compact shipment and storage of the brooms within small space, as well as'permitting the handle to be used and removed from the head as a carpet beater, clothes pounder or stick, or the like.
The invention has for its object the provision of a stock for removably receiving the handle and having means for securing the handle therein, and also provided with novel means for receiving and attaching the broom corn or the like.
A. still further object is to provide such a construction enabling the head to be readily applied to the stock either by hand. or machine, and the construction be simple and inexpensive, as well as providing for economy and convenience.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the stock showing the head split in two in the median other suitable material and which can be readily inserted lengthwise into the stock to fit snugly therein. A set screw 3 is screw threaded into the stock 1 near the inner or upper end thereof to engage the handle and hold it firmly in place. This screw, as shown, has an eye 4 in which a rin 5 is engaged whereby said ring can be used as a finger piece for convenience in rotating the screw, and the ring also enables the broom to be hung up on a nail or hook.
Before applying the broom corn or the like, a sheet or layer of wood veneer, orthe like, is wrapped around the stock 1, as at '6, and is held in place by bands? or string knives used in trimming the material from being dulled by contact with the metal stock 1. Thus, in applying the broom corn 8, and in trimming theends thereof, the knife edge is protected by the sleeve or covering 6. The broom corn is applied ,to the stock in the usual way, either by hand or by machine, and the broom head can be applied to the stock by the ordinary machine without any changes. Thus. a handle can be secured in the machine, and by placing a stock 1 over the end thereof, the machine will apply the head on the stock as it ordinarily applies the head on the handle, and the head can then of light, medium or thereon by means ofa binding wire 9. This wire has one end looped or otherwise secured through an aperture 10 in the stock 1 at the outer or lower end thereof, and said wire is wrapped around the broom corn in the usual or any suitable way. The free terminal of the wire is then wra ped around a headed stud 12 carried by t e stock lat a point the like.
spaced outwardly or downwardly slightly from the screw 3 and preferably located at the opposite side. ,Both ends of the wire are thus fastened to the stock to hold the broom corn firmly in place to embrace the stock.
The broom head is given its usual fiat shape although the head may be made in various forms, but in using the fiat head, the outer or lower end of the stock 1 is provided with diametrically opposite pointed lugs 13 extending at an angle therefrom at the ends of the major diameter of the elliptical end of the stock under the shoulders of the broom head as seen in Fig. 1, thereby serving to form the shoulders of the head, as well as preventing the stock and head from rotating relatively or sliding out of relative position.
In manufacturing the brooms, they can be made with the stocks only, and the broom heads can thus be shipped at minimum expense, due to the saving in space and the handles can also be shipped in small encompass. The handle and head can be readily assembled, and can also be separated to permit either the handle or the head to be. replaced when-worn out or damaged. Furthermore, the handle can be removed from the head at any time, so as to be useful as a carpet beater, clothes pounder or stick and When the broom head is worn out, the broom corn can be loosened from the stock, and the stock can be returned to the factory for reheading, this phase of the invention being more beneficial when a quantity of the stocks can be returned. For the usual individual need, a new broom head can be purchasedand applied to the old handle, or a handle if broken can be readily replaced by a new one.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A broom stock of tubular form to receive a handle having its lower end portion gradually increased in diameter and merging into elliptical form at the lower extremity of the stock and having pointed lugs bent outwardly at an angle therefrom at the ends ofthe major diameterof said extremity and located in the plane of said extremity to project under the shoulders of a flat broom head so as to spread the broom corn, and a binding wire anchored at one end to the lower end portion of said stock to bind the broom corn on the stock above saidlugs so as to bend the broom corn into the angles between said stock and lugs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
