Corn-Husking Thimbles.
Patented April 15,'e
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GASH AND CHARLES L. OWENS, OF CLINTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPRovEMENT IN coRN-HusKrNe THIMBLEs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,771, dated April 15, 1873; application filed October 21, 187]..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. Gnsrr and CHARLES L. OwnNs, of Clinton, in the county of De Witt and in the State of Illinois, have invented anew andusefulImprovementinOorn- Huskin g Thimbles and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed. drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Fignre l represents aperspective view of our improved husking-thimble applied to a glove. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of one of the fingers, showing the thimble with the knife-edge in the tip.
The same letters of reference are employed in both iguresto indicate identical parts.
Our improvement relates to the thimble of the glove; and consists in providing the same with a bead or iiange around its lower edge, which serves to keep it in place in the tips of the lingers and thumb thereof, and a blade for cutting and loosening the husks on the corn.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The glove A, as shown, is similar to those now in common use for protecting the back of the hand, fingers, and thumb, leaving the palm exposed. 'It also has a wrist-band, A', by which to secure it, but any ordinary glove of sufcient strength and durability may be used with our improved thimbles. B refers to a metallic thimble, around the lower edge of which is formed a bead or flange, c, which serves to hold the thimble in position in the tip of the linger or thumb of the glove. On`
`ble is properly inserted in the tip of a finger or the thumb of the glove, projects a short dis- 1 tance through the same, presenting a sharp point or edge, by means of which the husk may be cut-open and loosened to facilitate its final removal from the ear of corn.
The different thimbles should be made to tthe respective ngers which they are intended to protect.
The bead around the lower edge will generally be quite suicient to hold the thimbles in the tips of the fingers and thumb of the glove; but, if desirable, each may be provided with a short wire, b, fastened to the thimble with one end, while the other end, on inserting the thimble, is forced through the material of the glove, so that the wire may be wound around on the outside, and thus permanently secure the thimble.
The thimbles thus constructed will constitute a separate article of manufacture and sale, to be made in the various sizes required.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an articleof manufacture, a huskin gthimble provided with a blade for cutting the husks on the corn and an outward bead or ange around its lower edge, for the purpose set forth.
