To all w homit may concern .Be it known that 1, JOHN E. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lillington, l in .,tl1e county of Harnett and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Mop- Heads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in mops and more particularly to the head construction thereof.

An important object of this invention is to provide a mop head having novel means for detachably securing the cleaning element thereto so that the cleaning element may be renewed or replaced by one of a coarser or finer grade or by a new cleaning element.

A further object of the invention is to provide a mop head having a plurality of separate cleaning elements each of which may be removed or applied independently of the other cleaning element or elements.

A further object of the invention is to provide a mop head of the class described which is neat in appearance, of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates the improved mop head which includes a central section 7 and outer sections 6 and 8 which are arranged in parallel relation to the central section 7. The central or intermediate section 7 is of a greater width than the outer sections 6 and 8 and has a rearwardly and upwardly extending socket 10 formed integral therewith. A handle 11 is inserted within the socket 10 and is securely held within the same by a set screw 12 or other suitable fastening device. As illustrated in Fig. 2,

cleaning elements 13 .and ltare arranged between thecentral section 7 andthe outer sections 6 and S and havetheir outer portions extending above ,theplane of the "mop head so that when the sections 6, 7 and 8 are drawn together the cleaning elements will be securely gripped.

The means employed for securing the cleaning elements in position by drawing the sections together comprises a pair of bolts 17 which have their central portions extended through the central section 7 and provided with longitudinal ribs 19 or other suitable means for securing the bolts against rotation. The bolts 17 which are extended through openings in the end portions of the central section 7 are secured against endwise movement by suitable projections 20 which may be formed after the bolts have been extended through the said openings. The projections or burs 20 may be formed by striking the bolt with a cold chisel or other suitable tool. As illustrated particularly in Fig. 3, the bolts 17 are also ex tended through openings 21 in the end portions of the sections 6 and 8 and have threaded engagement with the winged nuts 23. If desired the wing nuts 23 may be displaced by square or polygonal nuts. Since the central portions of the bolts are rigidly secured to the central section 7, either or both of the outer sections may be removed. That is to say, the sect on 6 may be removed independently of the section 8 so as to allow one of.

the cleaning elements to be removed or applied independently with relation to the other cleaning elements.

When it is desired to remove one of the cleaning elements, it is merely necessary to loosen the bolts engaging the adjacent outer section so as to permit the said adjacent section to be moved outwardly out of binding contact with the cleaning element. The cleaning element may be rearranged and then applied to the mop head or an entirely new cleaning element may be applied to the mop head. It will be noted also that cleaning elements of different grades may be employed simultaneously for various cleaning operations.

It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed. 7 a

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A mop of the class described comprising a central clamping section, outer clamping sections arranged on opposite sides of said central section, bolts having their intermediate portions extended through and rigidly connected to said central section, whereby the bolts are held against endwise movement and rotation with relation to the central section, both end portions of each bolt being screw threaded and arranged on 0pposite sides of said central section, the outer sections being provided with openings detachably receiving the threaded end portions of said bolts, separate cleaning elements confined between said central and said outer sections, and a nut threaded on each end portion of each bolt for securing each cleaning element in position independently of the other cleaning element whereby one of the cleaning elements may be replaced independently of the other cleaning element.
