B. SUMMER FLOOR SCRUBBER Filed Feb. 1,

" UNITED STATES BENJAMIN sUMMnaor ELKHART, INDIANA.
FLOOR SCRUBBER.
' Application 'filed February 1, 1926. Serial No. 85,297.
My invention relates to floor scrubbersand is adapted for scrubbing and cleaning either uncovered floors or the covering of floors when such covering is of the linoleum or oil cloth type.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a device of this character embodying as cleaning elements a natural sponge and a rubber sponge arranged for convenient selective use in the cleaning operation and easy removal of accumulated dirt from the natural sponge element without having the hands of the operator come in contact with dirty water.
It is also the purpose of my present invention to so arrange and form certain structural elements of the device that said elements will cooperate one with the other to perform the double function of securing both the natural sponge and the rubber sponge in operative assembly, these structural elements also being capable of readily permitting adjustment of the rubber sponge to compensate for wear or the replacement of either the rubber sponge or natural sponge when such elements are worn to an extent which prohibits their further use. 7
Furthermore, it is the purpose of my invention to provide a device of the character specified which will be simple in construction, eflicient in use and relatively cheap to manufacture.
lVith the foregoing and other purposes in view my invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter described in detail and particularly pointed out in the claims. 1
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scrubbing device embodying my invention;
Figure 2, a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3, a detail view showing in separated relation the structural elements which cooperate to perform the dual function of securing both the natural sponge and the rubber sponge in operative assembly.
Referring to the drawings, my invention is shown as comprising a scrubbing device embodying spaced plates 10 and 11 between which is clamped a rubber sponge 12 the work engaging face of which is positioned well beyond the adjacent edges of the plates 10 and 11. Projecting centrally from the upper edge of the plate 11 is a lug 13 of substantially circular form and provided with an opening 14. The periphery of this lug 13 is provided with spaced grooves 15 and 16 opening through the ends of the lug for apurpose that will presently appear. An other lug 17 similar to the lug 13 projects from the-central portion of the upper edge of the plate 10. This lug 17 is provided with an opening 18 which registers with the opening 14 when the device is assembled to provide in conjunction with said opening 14 a socket for a handle 19 as clearly disclosed in Figure 2. Projecting forwardly from the lug 17 are arms 20 and 21 which seat in the grooves 15 and 16 respectively to interlock the plates 10 and 11 and thereby prevent any relative rotation of the plates about the handle 19. Projecting forwardly at respective ends of the plate 11 are arms 22 and 23, the free ends of which are provided with recesses 24 wherein is detachably seated a rod 25 carrying a natural sponge 26, the connection between said rod and sponge being effected by piercing the rod through the sponge. I employ a common means to hold the rod 25 in the recesses 24 and to clamp the plates 10 and 11 upon the rubber sponge 12, said means being in the form of a hook bolt 27 having its hook end engaged over said rod and its shank passed through openings 28 and 29 in the plates 11 and 10, respectively. A winged nut 30 is threaded on the end of the bolt 27 remove from its hook and cooperates with the outer face ofthe plate 10 to draw the rod 25 to its seat and clamp the plates 10 and 11 upon the rubber sponge 12 in a manner that will be obvious.
As a result of the construction heretofore described it will be apparent that by loosening the nut 29 the rubber sponge can be readily adjusted to compensate for wear, or if desired said sponge can be replaced by another. To replace the natural sponge the parts can be easily separated by entirely re- IIlOVlIlg nut 30 and quickly again brought into assembled relation after the rod 25 has been pierced through a new sponge.
In use the natural sponge 26 is initially employed to wet the surface to be cleaned, and then the rubber sponge 12 is worked over the wet surface to loosen all dirt, when the natural sponge is againeniployed to mop up the dirty liquid resulting from the scrub bing action of the rubber sponge. The sponge 26 1s so arranged and positioned on the dcvlce that by holdin'g'the same beneath a. spigot or pum discharge and tan'iping a scrubbing element between the plates,
spaced extensions on one of the plates a second scrubbing element, a rodpiercing said second scrubbing element and seated against the free-ends of said extensions, and means operable tb hold said red seated and "Force saith plates into clamping relation to the first scrubbing" element].
2*; In a@ scrubbing device; a pairot plates, at scrubbing element between the plates, spaced! extensionson one of the plates, a second scrubbing element, a: rod piercing said second scrubbing element and seated against the free ends of said extensions, a hook bolt extending through said plates with its hooked end engaged over said rod, and a nut' on said bolt coacting with the outer face of one of the plates to hold said rod seated and force said plates int-o clanip- .ing relation tothe first scrubbing element.
3. In a scrubbing device, a pair of plates. extensions oIr corresponding edges of the plates having alined handle receiving per torat'ions; interlocking formations on said extensions holding t'heplates against .relat-iw rotation about a handle, a scrul'ibingelement between said plates, a second scrubbing el'cnient and a connnon means operable-to hold the second scrubbing element against the outer face o1 one of the plates and force said platesinto clamping relation to the first scrubbing element.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aili'x my signature.
