This invention relates to improvements in squeegees for use in cleaning the surfaces of floors, windows and walls.
An object of my invention is to providemay be most conveniently and satisfactorily operated.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved squeegee having a construc- 29 tion which is not only designed to withstand hard usage but is also particularly adapted to perform its functions in a most efficient and satisfactory manner.
Other objects-more or less apparent will present themselves or will be specifically pointed out in the description to follow.
In the accompanying drawing: Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a squeegee constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the squeegee; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3.
The frame or body portion of my improved squeegee is made up of a forwardly disposed arcuate shaped frame member 1 and a rearwardly disposed arcuate shaped frame member 2, each of which is provided, respectively, 0 with a forwardly disposed longitudinally extending flange 1 and 2 at its top edge. The flange 1 of the frame member 1 underlies and contacts with the flange 2 of the frame member 2, thereby providing a construction which gives rigidity and durability to the frame. The frame member 1 is provided with a forwardly disposed longitudinally extending. shoulder 1a which is located between the flange 1' and bottom edges of the said 50 frame member. The frame members 1 and 2 are each bent forwardly at opposite points slightly above their lower edges to provide longitudinally disposed protuberances 1b and 2b. Suitably clamped between the frame members 1 and 2 by'means of bolts 3 and nuts 4: are flexible rubber strips 5 and 6. The strip 6 isnarrower in width than the strip 5 and projects for a less distance below the bottom edge of the frame than the strip 5. The upper edge of the strip 5 normally engages with the shoulder 1a of the frame member 1 and is thereby prevented from being forced upwardly beyond its proper normal position. When the frame members 1 and 2 are securely clamped together by the bolts and nuts, the protuberance 2b presses against its adjacent rubber strip 6, which in turn presses against the strip 5, thereby causing the latter to fill the depression provided at the concave side of the protuberance 1b. The cooperating protuberances of the two frame members cause the two rubber strips 5 and 6 to be firmly held in place, thereby preventing detachment or misplacement thereof from their normal operating positions. The extreme opposite ends of the frame members have rounded end pieces 7 secured thereto by means of bolts and nuts, the said pieces being intended to prevent the marring of such objects as might be encountered during the operation of the squeegee.
With its ends secured, as by welding, to the frame member 1 at points preferably equal distance from the ends of the latter, is a cross bar 8 which serves to reenforce the frame and at the same time provide improved means for attaching a pivoted handle. The cross bar 8 is provided with two separated projections 9 which are preferably located at equal distances from the center of the said bar, and between these projections is clamped the attaching means for the handle. The attaching means for the handle comprises two cooperating clamp -members 10 which are bolted together by bolts 11 and nuts 12. An end of the handle 13 is normally located between the clamp members 10 and is securely held in place when the bolts and nuts are properly tightened. The uppermost ofthe clamp members is provided at its forward end with a curved part which is adapted to extend partly around the cross bar 8 at points between the projections 9. A cooperating curved piece 14, also extending partly around the said cross bar is secured to the upper clamp member '10 by means of bolts 15 and nuts 16. The frictional pressure of the clamp member and the curved piece 14 against the cross bar 8 is such that the handle 13 is adapted to be pivotally moved either upward or downward independently of the frame of the squeegee. The handle 13 being pivotally attached to the frame of the squee gee, permits the rubber strips 5 and 6 to properly contact with the floor at all times,
irrespective of the movement of the said handie during the operation of the device.
Although I have shown and described my improved squeegee with, considerable particularity, I fully understand that it is susceptible of various changes in regard to both shape and. details of construction, so for this and other apparent reasons I desire my invention included broadly within the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is: I U V 1. A squeegee comprising a curved frame, a rubber strip secured to the frame and projecting beneath the lower edge thereof, a bar located within the curvature of said frame and being secured at its ends to the frame, a handle pivotally attached to the bar, and means carried by the bar for preventing the lateral displacement of the handle on the bar.
2. In a squeegee, a continuously curved frame having one or more flexible strips secured thereto and projecting beneath the lower edge of the frame, a cross bar located within the curvature of the frame, having its ends secured to the said frame at points between the ends of the latter, and a handle attached to the cross bar. 3. In a squeegee, a curved frame, one or more flexible strips secured to the frame, a rigid member located within the curvature of the frame, having its ends secured to the said frame at points between the ends of the latter, a handle, and means for pivotally attaching the handle to the rigid member which includes a plurality of clamp members embracing the handle, one of said clamp members being pivotally attached to the rigid member.
4. In a squeegee,a frame comprising two arcuate shaped completely spaced frame members, each having a forwardly disposed flange extending from its top edge, one of the flanges being located in contact with and. beneath the other flange, one or more flexible strips located between the frame members,
the said strips extending below the lower edge of the frame members, means for .clamp ing the frame members together, whereby the flexible strips may be maintained between the said frame members, an operating handle, a rigid cross bar secured to one of the frame members, Within the curvature of the latter and means attaching the handle to the bar. i
