Description

uiten stares L10I-IN n. HARRELL, or BELLEVIEW. FLonfnA,-
Y, A Hasil."
Letten.,
` Application sied october aaie'ac.' 'seriaina ei'aea l To all whom t may concern.' Y
Be it known that I, JOHND. LHARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleview, in the county of Marion and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
` on account of sagging of the doo-r or gate or the settling of a door jamb or post, be out of position to permit the hasp readily to be applied thereto. f Y
' lVith lthis and o-th-er objects in view, the invention consists in -certain novel features ofconstruction and combinations of parts as hereinafter `set forth and pointed outin the claims. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing an embodiment of my `invention; Figs.V 2 and 3 are views showing different positions of adjustment of the 'f parts; Fig. .4; is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section.
My` improved hasp comprises two flat metal bars'l and 2, the latter being provided near one end with a hole to receive a staple or other fastening means whereby the device may be attached to a door or gate. The bar member 2 overlies a portion of the bar member 1 and the latter is pivotally connected near 'its rear end toan intermediate portion of the former as indicated at 3. The member 2 is provided near its forward end with i a Itransverse slot 4; which receives a headed pin 5 projecting from'an intermediate portion -of the member 1 to permit limited vertical movement or adjustment ofthe latter.
The bar member 1 is made with an elongated slot- 6 to receive a staple 7 projecting Y i Specific-ation of Lettersgatent.. t j *Patented 10,
endf'of the* bar member 12 and partially over thebar member v1, so that the hook 11 of said bar 9 may be made to engage the staple 7. Y Y
l/V ith the use of my improvements, the hook bar 9 may be" moved longitudinally so that its hook will be permitted to easily and properly engage the staple and thus avoid vthe necessity of accurately locating the point of fastening of the hasp to the door or gate or the position of thestapleV on the door frame -or gate post. By reason of the pivotal connection between the two bar members, the memberrl may be raised 0r lowered to cause its slotted portion to propcrly engage the staple on the door frame or gate post if said staple be not in proper position by reason of shrinkage or settling of the part'to which it may be secured,` or
from other cause. e f
My improvementsare simple in construction and provide a hasp which maybe easily y'manipulated to readily engage a staple under any conditions which may be encountered.`
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A hasp comprising two members con nected by a horizontal pivot to permit of angular movement of the members with relation to each other, means for'limiting such angular movement, one of said members adapted to be pivotally connected adjacent its free end with a gate or gate post and the other member provided with a slot to receive a` staple secured to the gate postor movable and pivotal connection with the pivotal member of :said hasp and adapted to engage lthe staple passing through the slot in the other member of the hasp.
2. A hasp comprising two members, one overlyingv the other and pivotally connected together, such pivotal connection being located near one end of one of said members and intermediatev of the ends of the other member, oneof said members having a trans- 1 verse slot yand the-other member having a pm entering sald slot, one of said members having a staple slot and theother member having an elongated slot, and a hook bar provided with apin movable in saidy lastmentioned slot and pivotally connecting said hook bar with the member having said slot.
3. A. hasp composed of* two members fone of which Yis* transversely. pivoted adjacent one endto the other member intermediate the ends of. lthe latten means connecting the two members for limiting the pivotal movev kments of said members with relation to each other, one of said membershaving a hole at its outer end for permanent attachment to a support and the other member having a slot In testimony whereof, I have signed this 15 specification in lthe presence of two subscr1b1ng witnesses.
A* JOHN D. HARRELL.
