STERLING BOISSEAU, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
PUNCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STERLING BOISSEAU, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in punches and more particularly to such as are adapted for use by railroad or other officials for punching tickets, one object of the invention being to simplify and enhance the efficiency of multiple punches, whereby the same may be conveniently used for punching tickets with any of a plural ity of characters, each having a definite predetermined significance, and to so construct the device that any of the male and female dies may be removed and replaced by others having different characters, or they may be non-detachable.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a punch embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
The levers or jaws 1 and 2 of the punch are pivotally connected together at their forward ends and at their rear ends they are formed with handles 1 2. Theselevers and their handles are normally maintained spread apart by a coiled springii, the-ends of which may be inserted in sockets 5 in said levers.
The lever 1 is made with two or more forwardly projecting fingers 3, whereby slots 3* are formed, one in advance of another. The lever 2 is similarly provided with forwardly projecting fingers 4 whereby slots 4? are formed,-all of said slots 3 and 4P being open at their forward ends, to facilitate the insertion of tickets to be punched, and said slots may, if desired, be made of different lengths, as some of the characters employed may be longer than others.
Male dies or punches 6, 7 are pivotally and removably connected with the lever 1 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented M 3, 1921 Application filed July 31, 1920. Serial No. 400,445.
and are made in the form of plungers which are movable through guide openii'igs 8 in. the lever 2. The fingers 4 of the lever 2 are provided with openings in which female dies 9 are removably located for cooperation with the male plunger dies.
To facilitate the pivotal and removable connection of the plungers or maledies to the levers, they may be provided with flat tened portions 10 located in recesses 10 in the levers and having openings for the passage of the shoulder screws 11, the plain portions of said screws being located in slots 11 in the levers and nuts 11 may be located on the threaded portions of said screws. Rounded shoulders 12 formed at the ends of the flattened port-ions 10 of the male dies or plungers bear against the inner edge of the levers and in this manner strain on the screws or fulcrum members 11 will be relieved. Plungers or male dies Pare pivotally and removably connected with the lever 2 and their construction and mode of connection with said lever 2'are the same as above described in connection with the plunger dies connected with the lever 1. The plunger dies 7 a pass through guide openings 8 in the lever 1 and cooperate with removable female dies 9 carried by the fingers 3 of the lever 1.
By the construction and arrangementsas above described, male plunger dies are plvotally and removably connected with both levers of the device and removable female I dies are also carried by both levers. Provision is thus made, 1n a slmple and compact structure embodymg several character punches to enable a railroad or other official to punch tickets with the character which the circumstances in a given case may require, and thus avoid necessity for. the use of a number of separate punches. 7
By making both the male and female dies removable, they can be replaced with others .having different character designations as ger male die, each of said levers having an opening for the plunger die on the other lever, said ticket slots and dies being located rearwardly of the pivotal connection at the forward ends of said levers.
2. A multiple punch structure comprising two levers pivotally connected together and having ticket slots, a plunger die removhaving a shoulder to bear against the edge of the lever to which it is connected.
4. A multiple punch structure comprising two levers pivotally connected together at their forward ends each of said levers having a plurality of fingers forming ticket slots, female dies carried by the fingers of both levers, a plurality of male dies pivotally connected with each lever and coop erable with the female dies carried by the fingers of the said levers, and openings in one lever for guiding the 'inale dies connected with the other lever. I
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two Suhscrib'ing witnesses.
