COMBINED WINDIIW' SHADE AND CURTAIN FIXTURE.
1,3 Y6,38, Specification of Application filed December 23, 1319, Serial No. 345,89
1 e 0'55 whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, lVILLIAM C. J. MILLER, ci;:en of the United States, and resident f Fhiladelphia, in the county of Philadeland State of Pennsylvania, have ined certain new and usciul improvements Combined Vl lIKlOW Shade and Curtain fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supports for window shades and curtains, and my improvements are particularly directed to means in conjunction with devices of this character whereby shale rollers and curtain poles, of different lengths, may be supported by the same fixture without changing the secured position of the latter.
I; brief my invention may be said to consist or certain fixture elements to be secured as by screws, nails or otherwise, to a window asing at each side of the window, and said elements characterized as providin adjustseating means for a hanger or bearing member t is capable oi receiving either the spindle or the spring engaging stem of a shade roller and said seating means also being receptive of hangers or brackets capable of supporting a curtain rod. To this end the fixture elements aforesaid each comprise a channel member, having guides within which a socket member is laterally adj ustable, and said socket member being adapted for the reception of the shank portion of either or both a shade roller hanger and a curtain rod bracket. The lateral adjustability of the socket member permits the hangers or brackets, or both, at each side of the wiudow, to be suitably spaced apart for the use of w'ndow shades and curtains that are adapted for windows of diiierent widths.
Other features and advantages of my said invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a portion of a window frame, having my improved shade curtain fixture applied thereto.
Fig. 2, is a section on the line 22 of Fig. l l, and
Fig. 3, is view of the device in perspec tive elevation.
The present invention is devised for the purpose of facilitating the fitting of shade rollers and curtains to windows, wherein supports, which may be permanent fixtures secured to the sides of the window frame,

have lateral runways in which the brackets for a shade roller, and the hangers for a curtain pole are movably carried so that said brackets and hangers can be adjusted at different distances apart, for the purpose of serving with shade rollers and curtain poles or different lengths. The main purpose is that the fixtures may be of uniform character and bymeans of the adjustable feature they provide, said fixtures are applicable to windows of different widths, and consequently will support shade rollers and ourtain poles or rods of varying lengths.
The fixture element consists of a strip of metal or other suitable material, such as indicated at 1, having end securing means as at 2 whereby it may be more or less permanently attached to a window casing 3. In Fig. l l have illustrated only one of the fixtures, as applied to the casing at one side of the window, but my purpose is to apply a corresponding fixture to the casing at the opposite side of the window. Since however the fixtures at both sides of the window are of corresponding character the description and illustration of one will answer for both.
The strip 1 is provided with an upper channel l and a lower channel 5, formed, in the example shown, by turning over the edge ma erial of the strip in opposite directions, said channels serving as seats and guides for a laterally adjustablesocket member. In the present example this socket member is composed of a flat piece of metal or the like, as 6, having the upper and lower portions 7 which, respectively, engage slidably within the channels l, 5, and the body portion of said piece 7 having lateral wings 9 which are folded over upon said body portion, in spaced relation therewith, but leaving a clearance 8 between the opposed ends of said wings.
The space provided between the body portion or" piece 6 and its folded wings 9, registers with the channel 5, so that said space is capable of receiving the base 10 of a hanger member, whose shank 11 will at the same time be entered within clearance 8.
The forward portion of channel 5, is, as seen, provided with a series of slots 12, arranged lengthwise of said channel, the purpose of said slots being to register with the clearance 8 in the adjusted position of the socket member, so that the shank 11 01 the hanger member may enter an alined Patented Apr. 25, 1921.
slot, to thus lock said hanger in its desired position of lateral adjustment.
The length of the fixture elements, at both sides of the window, being of sufficient extent, and the channels 5 being provided with suitably spaced slots 12 for localizing the hanger members, it will be evident that all reasonable lengths of shade rollers may be accommodated, with their ends engaged in the bearings usually provided in the hangers. In Fig. 2 the hanger shank 11 is shown as having a circular bearing, as is usual for a hanger at one side of a window, while the same view, for convenience, shows, dotted in, a squared slot of usual character to represent the opposite hanger with its engaging means for the spring spindle of a shade roller.
Since the base 10 of the hanger member occupies only one side of the space provided in the socket members, I purpose utilizing the other side of said space as the reception means for the tang 13 or" a curtain rod bracket, whose support portion is i the form of an arm is extending at right angles from said tang and terminating in a rod engaging hook 15, the length of arm 1 being sufficient to hold the hook 15 extended out from the fixture suitably for its intended purpose.
The curtain rod brackets (there being one in each socket member for a window) re thus, equally with the shade roller hangers, adjustable laterally to serve with curtain rods of different lengths, according to the window requirements as to width of the curtains.
In devising the fixture aforesaid, with its adjustable and removable elements, I have had in mind the idea of providing per; manent fixtures of this character, so that when changing residence, the new occupant of a house need only provide the hanger and brackets, which can be so manufactured as to be available in a 5 and 10 cent store, and by whose means, owing to the lateral adjustment provided in the fixtures, shades and curtains of any desired width may be conveniently hung, without occasion for changing the positions of the fixtures.
Variations may be restorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention .and parts thereof used without others:
I claim 1. Shade roller supporting means comprising a fixture element, a laterally adjustable socket member therefor, and a hanger capable of removable engagement with said socket member, said fixture element having means to co-act with said hanger and thereby engagingly localize both said hanger and socket with respect to said fixture element.
2. Shade roller supporting means comprising a fixture element having a horizontal guide, a socket member adjustable along said guide, and a roller engageable member removably held by said socket memher, said fixture element having means to co-act with said hanger and thereby engagingly localize both said hanger and socket with respect to said fixture. element.
Shade roller supporting means including a strip of rigid material for attachment to a window casing, upper and lower portions of said strip having channels formed thereby, a socket member having end por- 'ment or said socket member, and said socket member further having a vertical clearance,
whereby a shade roller hanger, having a base portion and a shank extending at right angles therefrom, may have its base seated in said socket and its shank entered in said nce to ale engage in a slot with which said clearance alines in the adjusted position said socket.
5. A window fixture comprising a strip of rigid material for attachment to a window casing, said strip provided with upper and lower channels, a socket member adjustable within said channels, shade roller hanger and a curtain pole bracket removably carried by said socket member and means in one of said channels to co-act with said hanger in locking the socket member in an adjusted position.
Signed at the borough of Manhattan in the city, county and State of New York, this 20th day of December, A. D. 1919.
