CRANK-SHAFT GRINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
Application filed July 7, 1920. Serial No. 394,598.
To a]? whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELIJAH F. HAYs and Crmnrns E. GARRISON, citizens of the halt d States, residing at Mount Vernon,
county of Jefferson and State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful improvements in Crank-Shaft Grinders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for grinding the bearings of shafts and other bodies, and has for one of its ob ects to provide a simply constructed implement which may be readily applied to the shaft bearing and by which an unevenly worn or otherwise impaired bearing may be ground true, and restored to operative shape.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims. and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The improved device comprises a base member 10 having spaced longitudinal slots 11 and an operating handle 12 attached to or extending from one end.
Bearing upon the base member 10 between the slots 11, is a feed plate 13, the latter having a plurality of obliquely directed channels 1% to increase the grip, and secured to the member 10 in any suitable manner, for instance by bolts 15.
Disposed through the slots 11 are threaded rods or posts 16, the posts having clamp nuts 17 bearing against the lower face of Threaded upon each post 16 and bearing upon the upper face of the member 10, is a relatively thin washer 18. each washer having wings 19 depending into the slots 11 and connected to the posts by pins 20.
By this means the posts are held from turning in the slots, while at the same time adjustable longitudinally of the slots to vary the distance between the posts.
Threaded uponthe posts 16 are spacing blocks 21, the threaded apertures of the blocks being at one side of the center, so that by turning the blocks end for end upon the posts, the distance between their contiguous ends may be varied, to fit bearings of different sizes as hereafter explained.
An upper or follower member 22 is movably engaged with the posts 16 by longitudinally directed slots 23, and adjustable longitudinally of the posts by nuts 2 1 and 25, as shown.
Attached to the lower face of the follower member 22 between the posts 16 is an abrading element represented as a whole at 26, the member 26 being reduced at the ends and with outwardly opening slots in the reduced portions, to receive holding screws 27 and washers or templets 28.
The implement is applied by detaching the follower member 22 with its abrading element, and the member 10 disposed with the f ed plate 13 against the bearing to be 'ground, represented conventionally at 29,
and the blocks 21 and posts 16 adjusted to bring the blocks against the opposite sides of the hearing.
If the hearing be large, the shorter ends of the blocks will be presented to the hear ing, and if the bearing be small the longer ends will be presented to the bearing. The
blocks are thus readily adaptable to the size of the bearing and is firmly held from lateral displacement.
The follower member 22 is then applied with the abrading element 26 against the bearing, and the nuts 247-25 operated to cause the element 26 to bear with the requisite pressure against the bearing.
The implement is then rotated around the bearing by force applied to the handle 12, and continued until the abrading element. has worn away the uneven portions of the bearing, and truing the latter.
The pressure of the abrading element will be increased as required by adjusting the nuts 24 and 25.
The member 13 will preferably be of bronze or the like, to insure the requisite grip against the bearing, to insure the proper action.
The member 26 may be of any suitable material, substance or compound,such as abrasive stone, emery, carborundum, axolite, or the like, and after a short time Wears hollow and thus increases the Wearing surface and improves the action.
The blocks 21 being threaded upon the posts ran be adjusted longitudinally thereof by rotating, as nuts, upon the posts, and locked in position thereon byjam'nuts 29, and are adjustable longitudinally oi the members 11 and 22 by adjusting the posts 16 in the slots 11, and by changing the contiguous ends of blocks 21, and are adjustable laterally by turning them on the posts 16 until they are the proper distance from the base'member 10. The implement should be moved longitudinally of the bearing atthe same time that it is rotated thereon, to insure uniform action.
The improved device is simple in constrintion, can be inexpensively manufactured, and operates effectually for the purpose described.
The preferred embodiment of the inven tion is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications Within the scope of the claims may be made in the construction Without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
We claim:
1. An implement of the class described, comprising a base member carrying a feed plate, supporting posts in spaced relation rising from said base member, means for adjusting the posts longitudinally of the base member, supporting blocks carried. by said posts, a follower member movably engaging said posts, means for adjusting the follower member on the posts, and an abrading element carried by said follower member.
2. An implement 01" the class described, comprising a base member having longi tudinally directed slots, posts engaging in said slots and adjustable therein, supporting blocks rotatable on said posts and adjustable longitudinally thereon, a follower member having longitudinally directed slots through Which the posts pass, means for clamping said follower member to the posts, and an abrading element carried by the follower member.
