A. WINTON.
VALVE STRUCTURE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION MOTORS.
APPLICATION FILED APR.25, 1919.

sT rEs TENT VALVE srnucrnnn ron To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WINTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at which the following is a specification.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application relates to int rnal combustion engines and particularl to means for preventing the overheating of the exhaust valves.
In internal combustion engines, especially of the light compression type, great difiiculty results from the overheating of the exhaust valves. Indeed, the heat actlng uponthese valves is so great that many times the head of the valve becomes deformed due to the hammering of the valve upon its seat when so heated. Heretofore there has been no very convenient manner of cooling this valve. In the present app llcation, however, an arrangement 1s d1sclosed for circulating a cooling medium about the head of the valve, thereby lowering the temperature thereof to such an extent as to prevent deformation of the valve and injury thereto.
The invention may be further summarized as' consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claim.
-In the drawing, the figure represents the upper portion of a part of a cyllnder w th a head applied thereto, the parts being shown in section to show the invention.
In the embodiment shown, 1 represents a cylinder having a head 2 applied thereto. The head 2 is provided with an exhaust opening 3 and an intake opening {L The intake opening receives a valve cage 5 adapted to receive and lde an intake valve stem 6 having a valve ead 7.
In like manner this exhaust valve opening 3 receives anexternal valve cage comprising a valve seat portion 8, webs 9 and an upper guide 10. This guide 10 is interal with a hollow cylindrical ortion 11 v vhiohfextends out above cyliiider head. The upper open end of this cylindrical portion 11 is closed by a plston guide 12 shd- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably mounted in the cylindrical portion 11. Thls piston guide 12 has a central valve stem opening 13 for the exhaust valve stem 14 which extends down through the entire valve cage structure and is provided with a valve 15 at its lower end adapted to co operate with the valve seat portion 8. The piston guide 12 engages a pin 14: passing through the Valve stem 14. A spring 15' 18 arranged between the piston guide and the guide 10 for holding the former against the pin 14'.
The cylindrical portion 11 is provided with a side threaded opening 16 receiving an air or other cooling fluid pipe 17 connected to an air pump 18 or any other source of cooling fluid supply. Suitable openings ,19 extend through the guide 10 in a direction to direct the discharge of cooling medium from the chamber in the cylindrical portion 11 against the valve within the seat portion 8. The exhaust valve cage is located in an exhaust chamber 20 which is in communication with an exhaust port 21 so that the air directed against the exhaust valve and its seat discharges freely into this exhaust chamber and out through the exhaust port.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the cool air delivered to the hollow cylindrical portion will be delivered to the valve cage and valve in a manner to keep these parts cool and prevent their becoming overheated.
What I claim is In an internal combustion motor, a cylinder, a head therefor having an exhaust valve cage opening and an exhaust chamber in communication therewith, an exhaust valve cage mounted therein and comprising a valve seat portion and an air chamber member connected therewith, said air chamber member having a valve stem opening therethrough and a series of air discharge openings surrounding said stem opening, an exhaust valve having a stem ALEXANDER 'WINTON.
