LOCKING-RAIL FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1621.
Application filed October 4, 1920. Serial No. 414,611.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE BImznAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking-Rails for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to a locking rail for automobiles for preventing theft of lap robes or other similar articles.
It is an object of my said device to provide a locking device which shall be adjustable for various thicknesses of material that may be placed on the rail and which shall hold such articles securely locked irrespective of their thickness.
Another object is to provide a locking rail which shall oifer increased resistance when an unwarranted attempt is made to withdraw the lap robe or other articles therefrom.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a part of an automobile having my device attached thereto, 7
Fig. 2 is a plan of the device with supportin means therefor,
Fig. 3 a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. i a section on line 4- of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 shows a modified form of a bracket for supporting my locking rail.
In the drawings 1 indicates the body of an automobile having a seat 2 to the back of which are attached brackets 33., 8 which may be of any conventional or desired form and to which a bar or rail 4 may be rigidly affixed as by means of screws. or the bar may be integral with the brackets as desired. At one end of the bar 4: there may be a portion 5 preferably integral with bar d and eX- tending substantially at right angles thereto for the purpose of spacing a bar 6 from the bar 4:, the bar 6 being pivotally connected to member 5 at 7. At the opposite end of bar 6 is an arm 8 preferably integral therewith and having a plurality of spaced teeth at one side. A look casing 9 which may be attached to the bar 4 or formed integral therewith orotherwise held in fixed post by pivot 20.
position contains a detent 1O moved in one the lowest position to which it can be forced by the user. The casing 9 has a key hole in which a key 12 may operate on the projection 13 on the detent to unlock the device and permit the arm 8 to be withdrawn so that the robes may be removed from the rail 4. Bars d and 6 have fiat faces on their inner sides and strips of felt or like material '14: I
are attached to these faces by means of strips of material such as brass 15 fastened to the bars by any convenient means such as screws 16.
Various modifications of my device will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and I do not' desire to limit myself to the particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, the true scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims. I
As an example of one modification of the bracket of my device I have shown in Fig. 5 post comprising a base 17, an upright member 18, and a member 19 hinged to the Two posts of this sort may be used in place of the brackets 3 and the pins 19 may be passed through rail 4. The pins 19 may be fixed to the bar 4 in any conventional way as by placing a washer thereabout and upsetting the end 'of the pin to act as a'rivet. the locking rail may swing down after the YVith such a bracket robes have been placed thereon, thus taking;
up less room in the car and being outof the way of the passengers.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
1. In a lap-robe holder, opposed clamping bars having opposed faces, and a strip of flexible material on one of the opposed faces said strip. being secured at the middle and free at the sides, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lap robe holder for automobiles, supporting" means adapted for attachment to an automobile, a bar pivoted thereto, a
second bar pivotally connected to the first,
strips of flexible material attached to the opposed faces of the bars, rigid strips extending centrally of said strips of flexible material and fastened to the bars, a lock on the first bar and means at the free end of the second bar to engage said lock adjustably 5 to vary the space between the bars, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Racine, Wisconsin, this twenty-first day of September, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty.
