ALBERT BLANKS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO NUGGET POLISH (10.,
LTD., OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
MEANS FOR FACILITATING THE OPENING OF TINS.
Application filed March 26, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT BLANKS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Means for Facilitating the Opening of Tins, of which the follo ring is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct the lids of tins or the like in such a way as to permit of their ready removal from the tins to which they are attached.
My invention relates to tin or other like containers the mouths of which can be closed by means of removable lids having depending flanges or sides fitting more or less hermetically around the marginal portions of the mouths, and it consists in improvements the object of which is to facilitate the removal of such lids from the containers.
To the above end I furnish a tin or the like with means that allow of its lid being tilted, when it is in a closed position, to a small extend, relatively to the lip or edge of the tins mouth.
In carrying out my invention, I provide on the side or sides of the lid inwardly projecting and oppositely disposed embossments or indentations, preferably two in number.
The two embossments on the lid each form a fulcrum for the pivoting or tilting of the lid on the top edge or edges of the container. These embossments are o disposed that they will be clear of or will not touch the top edge of the container until a slight tap is administered to the lid at a point on its top edge about midway between the embossments for the purpose of effecting its removal. The embossments will consequently in no wise interfere with the air-tightness of the closed container.
The lid may bear an indication showing where the same is to be tapped to insure the ready opening or removal thereof.
I will further describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an elevation of a tin or like cylindrical container and lid, the latter having embossments formed on its side; and Fig. 2 is section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing (4 denotes a container of tin or other like material and b is its cover, which may be formed in any convenient known manner. The marginal or periph- Specification of Letters Patent.

eral portions of the mouth of the container on to which the lid is made to fit as tight as may be necessary is of an external diameter slightly smaller than the lower portion, to allow of the outer surface of the side of the lid being flush with the lower side surface of the container, and to form a shoulder a on which the lower edge of the lid may bear. A pair of suitably shaped embossments (4 are formed on the depending wall 6 of the lid in positions which are diametrically opposite and are so selected that the lower surface of the embossments will be about level with or immediately above the top edge a of the side wall of the container a. If the top edge 72 of the lid, when in closed position as indicated in Fig. 1, be tapped in the manner above alluded to, the embossments a will be brought into engagement with the edge a of the mouth of the container so that the lid may tilt or pivot to a small extent, the embossments a turning on the edge a while the lower edge 5 of the lid 6 tends to expand slightly in consequence of its being forced over the shoulder a by the tapping. and easily removed from the mouth of the container.
It may be advantageous to form the active faces of the embossments flat, as shown for example in Fig. 4c.
The invention is equally applicable to flat sided containers and lids, in which case the embossments would be formed on oppositely disposed sides.
Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I elaim:
In a tin or like container having a mouth of smaller diameter than the body portion thereof and having removable lid which has a top member and a depending flange adapted-to close the mouth of the container in a substantially hermetieal manner, the mouth portion being so formed as to provide an annular shoulder on the outer face of the body portion against which the lower edge of the lid abuts when in closed position, means whereby the lid while soclosing the container may be tilted to a small extent relatively to the mouth of the container for the purpose of facilitating its removal, said The lid' can then be readily means comprising a pair of oppositely disshoulder when the lid is tapped at a point posed and inwardly projecting embossments between said embossments to tilt said lid formed on the depending flange of the lid and spread the depending flange, substan- 10 and s0 located as to be above the edge of tially as described.
the mouth of the container when the lid is In testimony whereof I have signed my in normalclosing position and adapted to name to this specification.
engage and cooperate with the said edge and V V ALBERT BLANKS.
