LUDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookland, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Serving-Bowls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in serving bowls and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection wit grape fruit and kindred fruits, and it is an object of themvention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the user is effectively protected against indiscriminate splashing or squirting of the juice of the fruit during the period the pulp is being extracted by a spoon or other suitable eating utensil.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a novel and improved device of this general character including a bowl adapted to contain the fruit, together with means whereby the bowl may be effectively supported in position for use.

An additionalobject of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a bowl adapted to contain the fruit, together with a removable cover mounted upon the bowl and overlying the upper open face thereof, said cover being provided with a suitable entrance opening to permit the desired application of a spoon or kindred eating utensil to the fruit.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved serving bowl whereby certain impor tant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and othcrwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a base or stand substantially conoidal in form and preferably hollow with the lower or open face thereof defined by a depending flange or bead 2 to facilitate the proper setting of the base or stand upon a table or other surface. 7

The upper or apex portion of the base or stand 1 is continued by a relatively short upwardly directed tubular neck 3. The wall of the neck 3 at diametrically opposed points is provided with the upstanding arcuate arms 4 having their upper or free end portions connected by an annular member 5, said member 5 being substantially concentric to the axial center of the neck3.

The upper portion of the nee-k8 at opposite sides of the arms 4 is provided with the upstanding webs or llps 6 substantially concavo-convex in form and br dging the space between the arms l, said webs or lips being preferably integrally formed with the neck 3 and the arms 4c.

A bowl B preferably of glass and substantially semispherical in form is adapted -to be snugly inserted through the annular member 5 and rest upon arms 4 and the webs or lips 6 whereby the bowl B is elfectively and conveniently supported by the base or stand 1.

The bowl B has its upper or free marginal portion provided with a continuous eX- tension 7 substantially straight in cross section and upon which is adapted to be rested the cover member C. The cover member 0 is also preferably of glass and approximates the form of an inverted dish.

The crown or top wall 8 of the cover member C is gradually curved toward a radial point eccentric to the axial center of the cover member C. The high point a of the crown or top wall 8 of the cover member C is positioned at the top of an entrance opening 9 substantially in the form of an inverted V in elevation and which opening has its side or vertically directed edges disposed on a slight inward curve, as indicated at Z). The entrance opening 9 is of such size to permit the ready insertion therethrough of a spoon or kindred eating utensil so that the pulp of a grape fruit or kindred fruit may be readily removed.

The applied cover member C serves effectually to prevent indiscriminate squirting or splashing of the juice of the fruit, thereby obviating a material objection.

The lower or free marginal portion of the vention is susceptible of some change and "modification without departing from the and independently of the bowl B as the rcquirements of practice may necessitate.

To further facilitate the maintenance of the bowl B in applied position, the axial center of the bowlhas depending therefrom a cylindrical boss or lug 11 whiclnwhen the bowl is in applied position, extends within and preferably through the neck 3. The boss or lug 11, when in position within the neck3, provides apart which serves ef fectually to prevent the bowl B from having rocking movement in a direction axially of the bowl independently of the supporting structure for the bowl.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a serving bowl constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my inprinciples and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

A device of the class described comprising, in combination, a stand provided with an upstanding hollow neck, a supporting base' integral with and above the hollow neck, a plurality of webs and arms eXtending upwardly from the base, the arms extending upwardly farther than the webs, a continuous member supported by the arms, a bowl insertible through the continuous member and supported on the said base and webs, a cover for said bowl, depending fingers carried by the cover and contacting with the opposite faces ofthe bowl for holding the cover in applied position, said cover having its crown portlon tapered toward a point to one side of the axial center of the bowl, the crown portion of the cover being provided with an entrance opening, the high point of the taper being adjacent the top ofsaid opening.
