This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fuses of the cartridge type.
I `@ne ofthe principal objects ot the invention is to provide a cartridge fuse in which the knife blade terminals are detachably connected with the respective ends of the casing in a novel manner to permit said casing and blades having relative longitudinal movements, whereby saidV blades, with connected races, may be readily inserted within the casing, and the blades lirnily clamped thereto. Another object otmy invention is to provide av cartridge fuse of the character above described in which the connecting means :tor the terminal blades are oft such construction as to prevent relative oscillation of the blades when the same are being connected,
or eve-n disconnected, from the casing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knife blade terminal from a blank of `.metah and to provide` a lined collar thereto in a novelmanner.
A further 'object of the invention is te provide a terminal blade with a 2-part and detachable interlocking collar which cooperates with the fixed collar on the blade to limit the inward movement oli said blade relative to the casing.
These and other objects will in part be obvious, and will be hereinafter more fully disclosed. y

responding groove 8 in the outer face of the casing. The outer end of the iei'iule is provided with an inwardly extending flange 9, having a centrally disposed opening 10 of the same diameter as the internal diameter of the casing. The i 'ferrule is normally dared, as shown in Fig. 2, and after the end of the casing has been inserted against the flange 9, the wall of the ferrule is pressed tightly around the casing, causing the rib 7 to lit the groove 8 and thereby permanently interlock and thereby secure said ferrule and casing against relative movements. The outer end of the errule is provided with an exterior thread 11, the thread on one i'eriule being right-handed, and the thread on the other ierrule being left-handed.
Each knife blade terminal 12 is centrally provided along its side edges with cut-out portions 155-13, each forming resultant upper and lower shoulders 14; and 15. These cut-out portions 18 form a resultant reduced portion or web 16, and the opposite 'l'aces ot this web 15 are respectively 'formed with grooves 17-1?, which are disposed adjacent and merge with the shoulders 15--15. The grooves 17-17, of course, extend transverse to the longitudinal axis of the terminal. Each terminal is provided adjacent one end with a threaded opening 18, and a clamp screw 19 is threaded into 'said opening for clamping one end of the fuse 2O to said terminal. y
The fuse in Fig. 1 is a wire 'fuse and is provided with one or more weakened portions 21. ln this case, the weakened portions 21 are created by flattening the wire and there are two of these portions arranged adjacent their respective terminals. ln Fig. 7, l have shown a iiat form of fuse 20. The ends of the `fuse 22 are provided with atteaching forks 23-28, and the body of the fuse is cut-out, as at 2424 to form spaced reduced portions 21-21.
Rigidly secured to each terminal 12 is a collar, which, in this instance, is made from two disks 26 and 27. Each disk is provided with a centrally disposed rectangular opening' 23 for receiving the web 1G of the terminal. Each disk is slit as at 29. Each disk. which is made of copper, is normally formed with a slot at the point of the slit, "iid slet being sulliciently wide to permit the disk to be slid on to the web 16 along the groove 1T the cof. After the web has thus been inserted the said slots are closed by pressing the parts of the disk together. After the two disks have been thus positioned, they are crushed so as to bring the slotted ends in close relation and thereby form a tight interlocking connection with the web 16. rlhe diameter of these disks is slightly less than the interior diameter of the casing.
A removable collar is also associated with :ich terminal 12. This removable collar is indicated as a whole by the numeral 30, and includes two sections 31 and 32 respectively. The sections are alike and are conjointly formed with an opening 33 which snugly lits the web 1G. rlhe collar is formed into two sections b v being separated along the lines Formed in each section and on opposite sides of said web are openings 35 Yfor receiving pins 36-36 permanently secured to the fixed collar. At the ends of the slot 33 the outer surfaces of the sections 31 and are each inclined toward the web 16 to permit the sections to be slipped under the shoulders 14 and then engage with the pins 36. It will thus be seen that l have provi/let two-part collar which has interlocking' engagement with the terminal through the medium of the fixed collar.
In operation, after the fuse wire 2O has been connected to the terminals by the s rews 19, the entirety is slipped through tl, e open-ended tubular casing, and the two-part collars 30 are then detachably connected with the respective terminals. These collars 30 have a diameter greater than the interior diameter' of the casing, and consequently bear against the outer ends of the ferrules. The end caps are then slipped over the projecting ends of the terminals, and both end caps and terminals are held against rotary movement while the casing is simultaneously screwed into both end caps by reason of the right and left hand threads thereof. Vhen it is desired to insert a new fuse wire, or to inspect the same, the reverse operation, as above described, is performed. In both cases, however, the end caps and terminals are held against rotary movement while the casing is either connected or disconnected from the end caps.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the casing 5 is provided with a ferrule 41, which is inserted within the end of the casing and then expanded so that the outwardly extending rib 42 will engage acorresponding groove formed in the inner face of the casing. The ferrule is exteriorly threaded as at 43, for the same purpose as previously described.
T he casing is centrally provided with a removable plug 44 for the outlet of any gas which may be generated within the casing, which plug will be blown out by the excessive pressure of the accumulated gases, thus preventing the casing being destroyed or damaged.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is:
1. The combination with a fiat terminal blade having opposed recesses merging with its side edges and forming a resultant web, and a collar fixedly secured to said web and having a slit extending from the web to the periphery thereof.
2. The combination of a terminal blade having opposed recesses merging with its side edges and forming a resultant web, and a collar tixedly secured to said web, said collar being' formed from two superimposed disks, pins uniting said disks, each disk having an opening to receive the web and having a slit extending from the opening to the periphery thereof to receive said web.
f3. he combination of a terminal blade having opposed recesses merging with its side edges and forming a resultant web, a collar lixedly secured to said web, and a rcmovable collar of a. greater diameter than tl e fixed collar having interlocking engagement with said web and fixed collar.
4. The combination of an open ended tubular casing, spaced terminal blades extended into the open ends of said casing, a fuse connecting said blades, each of said blades having opposed recesses merging with its side edges and forming a resultant web,
collar fixedly secured to said web and having a slit extending from the web to the periphery of said collar, a removable collar of greater diameter than the fixed collarhaving interlocking engagement with each of said webs and each of the fixed collars, and detachable means respectively coperating with said blades and casing to lock said blades against longitudinal movement relative to the casing.
