Description
H. SEUFERT ELECTRiC CONTACT PLUG Filed Nov. 2, 1932 INVENTOR Patent n w. as, teat.
HEB-MANN SEUFERT, O'F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ELECTRIC CONTACT PLUG.
Application filed November 2, 1922. Serial Ho. 598,482.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN SEUFERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Electric Contact Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to electric contact plugs and has for its object to provide a plug which would be suitable for interchangeable use either to fit male contact members projecting from a body or from an article to which the plug is to be applied, or to fit in sockets or'female members provided in the same. 1
While in one country the plugs are formed with male contact members, in other countries the same are formed with sockets or female contact members. In designing a contact plug that will suit both constructions the manufacture is greatly simplified and its cost of production reduced.
My invention willbe more fully under a stood by reference to the accompanying drawin 1n WhlOh similar reference char-- acters denote corresponding parts, and in which Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved contact plug; Fig. 2 a cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a similar view to Fig. 1 of a modified construction; Fig. 4 a longitudinal section thereof on line 4-4 of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5
a cross section on line 5-5 of Fig, 3.
In the drawing 10 denotes the plug proper which, as usual, is made of insulation material and composed of two sections 10',
10 adapted to be joined together, as byscrews 11. after the parts are assembled. Each half or section interiorly is provided with two sets of grooves 12 and 13, which when the sections are assembled, willform seats for two pairs of contact members 14 and 17. The contact members 14 are each made in form of blocks or bars of metal and'square cross section and provided with terminal screws 21 at one of their faces for the attachment. of the electric wires 22. Each of these blocks is provided with a central cylindrical bore 15 open at its ends, the inner end of said bore being somewhat reduced in diameter and threaded, as
at 16. These bores 15 whose diameter and length are of standard size, serve as female contact members to he -used in cooperation with male contact members of the body or article to which the plug is to be applled. The members of the other pair 17 are in form of elongated pins of circular crosssection whose diameter is sub-' stantially equal to the diameter and whose length is about double that of the bores 15. Thes pins 15 serve as male contact members and are adapted to be used as such in cases where the body or articlet'o which the "block is'to be applied is formed with female contact members. The inner ends of the contact members 17 are reduced in diameter and threaded as at 18, so that when the pins 17 are fitted in the bores'15, their threaded extensions 18 will work in the threaded ends 16 of the bores 15, whereby the pins will be secured in position. 7
When not in use the male members'17 will bear in-their sockets 13, which at their in-' ner ends are also -formed with threaded extensions 13 to engage the threaded portions of the pins 17. As usual, the pins 17 are split centrally and longitudinally, as at 19, from their outer ends up to an intermediate point oftheir length. The outer ends of the bores,13 being open, it is possible, by the use of an ordinary screw driver or the like, to tighten or untighten the pins from the outside of the plug without separating the sections of the latter to adjust them 'either to inoperative or operative position.
In each half or section of the block there is also a central bore 20 extending from the upper or front end thereof and terminating at a point below the terminal screws 21. The inner or lower end of this central bore 20 is somewhat widened to form space for the accommodation of the terminal screws 21 and-the parts of the electric wires extending therefrom, while the central part of the bore serves as a passage for said two wires 22.
that when the plug is to be used with the male contact members, the latter are un-.
screwed from their sockets 13'andscrewed into the bores 15 of said female contact members,
The advantage of this construction over any known construction resides in the fact that the plug sections need not be separated in order to change from female contact members to male contact members, or vice versa.
In the modifications shown in Figs. 3 to 5, the sockets 13' adapted to contain the male contact members 17 are extensions of the bores 15' of the female contact members 1 and the male contact members 17' are capable of being shifted longitudinally from their sockets 13 thru the bores 15 to extend outwardly from the plug, when the latter is to be changed to one with male members. In this case the upper ends of the bores or sockets 13 are closed. In order to allow of the adjustment of the pins 17 without separating the sections of the plug, each contact member 17' is provided with a projection or cross pin 23 which projects outwardly thru a longitudinal slot 10 provided in one of the sections or halves of the plug.
, These slots 10 are formed at their ends with In every other respect the construction of the plug is the same as the first described construction.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isr- 1. Anelectric connector composed of two detachable sections ofinsulation material, each section having a central bore to form a passage for the wire, and two sets of grooves adapted to form sockets,-the sockets of one set being internally threaded at their inner ends, contact pins adapted to removably bear in said last named sockets, and having externally threaded ends adapted tobe screwed into the threaded ends of said sockets and contact sleeves adapted to bear in the grooves of the other set and having internal threads to engage said pins, the latter being adapted, when positioned in said sleeves, to snugly fit therein and project, outwardly to constitute plugs, and terminal means positioned in said central'bore and leading to said sleeves for the attachment of the electric wires. 7
2. An electric connector composed of two detachable sections of insulation material, each section having a central bore to form a passage for the wires, and two sets of grooves adapted to form sockets, the sockets of one set being internally threaded at their inner ends, longitudinally slotted con-' tact. pins adapted to removably bear in saidlast named sockets and having externally threaded ends adapted to be screwed into the threaded ends of said sockets and contact sleeves adapted to bear in the grooves of the otherset and having internal threads to en: gage said pins, the latter being adapted, when positioned in said sleeves, to snugly fit therein and project outwardly to constitute plugs, and terminal means positioned in said central bore leading to said sleeves for the attachment of the electric wires, the slots in said pins serving for the insertion of a tool for facilitating the changing of the position of said pins without detaching the sections of the connector. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
