Be it known that I, JOHN RAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electricalv Connectors, of which the following isl a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the .accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to electrical connectors and more particularly to a connector for fastening a wire tov another conductor to make electrical contact therewith and has for its objects the provision of a connectorl Which will make positive electrical contact at all times without injury to the wire; which shall'be free from projecting parts; which shall consist of few parts and those of easy and inexpensive manufacture; which shall be-easily adjusted for gripping or unfastening the wire; while further objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing where I have shown certain illustrative embodiments of my said invention, but without intent to limit myself thereto, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one half of an electrical connector in common use and to which my invention may be applied; Fig. 2 is a similar view but at right angles to Fig. 1 and with the insulating sleeve removed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged lon 'tudinal section of F 1g. 2 showing the lod of connecting the wires; Fig. 4 .is an enlarged sectional View showing the manner in which the wire is fastened to the conductor; Fig. 5 1s a plan view of the Y gripping member partly formed; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the gripping member inthe finished form; Fig. 7 is a side elevation, with parts broken away, ofv the gripping memberl and adjusting bushing therefor;

. escribing the various parts by reference numerals, 1 indicates the entering half of an electrical connector of the bayonet type which has the contact rods 2 imbedded in the insulating material with their longitudinal axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the connector. The rear end of each of the rods 2 is formed with a socket having its inner part tapered as at 4 and its outer part threaded. as at 5 to receive a/bushing 6, having a sultable head 8 such as a liexagon so as to be readily turned with a pair of pliers or wrench. If desirable the head 8 may be round and have a knurled edge so as to be readily turned by the fingers.
The bushing 6 is formed with a bore 7 and its inner end is counterbored to form a seat 9 for the body 10'of the 'gripping "member, The gripping member may be formed by stamping a blank of the desired shape, as shown in F ig. 5, from sheet metal, then punching the hole 11 and at the same time drawingthe central portion to form the tubularbody l0 and bending the legs 12 together to`form the finished product,
-shown in 6. The legs 12 are preferably arcuate in cross section, so as to conforml to the surface of the Wire, and this may be accomplished during the stamping operation.
In assembling the parts the body 10 of the gripping member is fitted into the seat 9 of the bushing which is in turn. screwed into the threaded portion 5 of the socket a few turns. The bared end of the wire is then passed through the hole 7 -of the bushing and 11 of the gripping member, (it being understood that these holes are in alignment) and down to the bottom of the ta the many uses to which my connector may be applied. Fig. 8 represents a connector for two wires and consists of a suitable rod 13- provided at each end with the bushing and gripping members previously described. Fig. 9 -shows my device applied to the terminals of a dry battery. i
It will be understoodl that the foregoing are only a few of the Amany physical forms in which my invention can 'be embodied and that many changes can be made within the scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An electrical connector comprising an 'externally threaded, longitudinally bored,

entering' member having legs projecting from the inner end and arranged symmetricallyv tion with a receiving member having a tapered socket adapted to have a wire bottomed therein, of a gripping member having legs adapted to enter said'socket between Vsaid wire and the tapered`wall, and means lsurrounding said wire for forcing said gripping member into said socket to converge the legs vthereof against said wire and force said wire against the bottom of said socket.
3. An electrical connector comprising a receiving member having a tapered bore terminating in a seat, a gripping member positioned in said bore and having a plurality ,of
' legs the ends of which'are adapted to engage the walls of sai'd tapered bore, and means for forcing said gripping member inwardly to cause the ends of said legs to engage a wire and force it to the seat of said tapered b0re.
4. An electrical connector comprising a receiving member havmg a tapered bore terrelance minating in a seat, a bushing member threadedv-into the-open end of said tapered bore, a gripping member having a body portion contacting with said member and a plurality of Alegs extending therefrom and contacting at theends thereof with the walls of said tapered bore., said bushing and gripping member' being provided each with a'longitudinal bore .to receivel a wire and said gripping member being adapted to engage said wire to force it to the seat of said tapered bore upon rotation of saidv bushing member. y
' 5@ An electric conductor comprising a receiving member having a tapered bore terminating in a seat; a gripping member'seated in said bore; said gripping member comprising a bushing having a. bore coaxial with the tapered bore; resilient gripping fingers projecting from the gripping member and arranged about the bore therethrough so spaced as to be normally out ofcontact with a wire passed through said bore; and means for forcing the ends of said gripping fingers inwardly'so as to cause them to contact with the wire at an angle to the axis thereof and to force the end of the wire in said seat.
