Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 8, 1920. Serial No. 372,294.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, BOLLING L. BLOOKER, a citizen of the United States residing at Chattanooga, in the county of flamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking Seats for Children, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved amusement device especially adapted for children whose action is similar to a see saw and which can be effectually used indoors as well as outdoors.

Another object of theinvention is to provide improved rocking device for children having a pair of oppositely disposed seats positioned therein and provided with pivoted handles for each seat so arranged as to prevent a child from falling ofi of the seat.

ii further object of the invention is to provide an improved rocking device for children embodying an arcuate body having a seat arranged at each end thereof and provided with a bar and handles, the terminals of the arcuate body having depending bumpers formed thereon so as to prevent the accidental turning over of the body when the same is in use, the bumpers being so disposed as to form carrying handles so as to facilitate transporting of the device.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved amusement rocking device for children of the above character which iscxceedingly simple and durable in construction and which is easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel. construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved toy, which includes an arcuate body 5 which may be formed of any material, such as metal, wood or the like,

back rests 11 which prevent the children from falling backward off of the seat. If so desired the seat 9 may be placed below the top surface of the side members 6 so as to provide sides to the seat or extra side'pieces 12 may be provided as shown in Fig. 1. Spaced transverse cleats 13 are arranged on the upper surface of the bottom wall 8 and a are secured to the side bars 6 and these cleats form braces for the same and also foot rests for the children when the device is in use. These foot rests 13 are arranged in spaced relation to the seats 9 and 10 and can also form stops for weights which can be placed in the body when children of unequal size are on the seats 9 and 10. I

To further prevent the children from falling out of the seats, handles 1 1 are provided for each seat, and these handles include side bars 15 and a cross handle or bar 16 which is adapted to be grasped by the child.

The lower terminals of the arms 16 are provided with pivot pins 17 which are slidably mounted in suitable groovesi18' formed in the side member 6.

The bumpers 20 are carried by each terminal of the body so as to prevent the accidental tipping over of the body when the device is in use. These bumpers are arranged in pairs and. extend outwardly and downwardly from the body and are provided with relatively large feet 21 for engaging the surface of the ground or floor. These bumpers may be carried by end plates 22 which may be secured to the end bars 7 by suitable fastening elements 23.

These bumpers are so disposed in relation to each other as to form handles for the device whereby the same may be readily grasped by the children so thatthe device can be moved from one place to another.

In use of the improved toy, the children first sit on the seats 9 and 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the same is operated similar to the ordinary see saw. In starting the device, one child leans toward the center of the body while the other child leans backward away from the center, thus moving all of the weight off center, which starts the body rocking toward one end. When the body has reached the limit of its rocking motion, the children reverse their positions which rocks the body toward the other end. The handles 14 are so arranged as to permit the swinging movement of the childrens bodies during the ac tuating of the device.

The outer surface of the lower wall 8 may be provided with rubber strips or runners or the like, so as to prevent the marring of a floor when the device is used indoors. If so desired balls or the like can be placed in the bottom of the body, which would add to the attractiveness of the device while the same is in use.

From the foregoing description it can be seen that an exceedingly simple and durable amusement device is provided for children, which embodies a minimum number of parts and which has no complicated or intricate mechanism to become out of order.

Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention; but,

I claim:

1. A rocking toy comprising an arcuate body, seats arranged in each end of the body, and a pivoted and sliding handle for each seat.

2. A rocking toy for children comprising an arcuate body, seats arranged adjacent to the terminals of the body, foot rests carried by the body and arranged in front of the seats, and sliding handles for each seat.

3. A roclrlng toy for children comprising an arcuate body, a seat arranged adjacent to each terminal of the body, and a sliding handle arranged in front of each seat.

4. A rocking toy for children comprising side walls, an arcuate lower wall, and end walls connecting' the side walls and lower walls, and outwardly and downwardly eX- tending spaced bumpers carried by the end walls and extending below the surface of the lower wall.

5. A rocking device for children comprising an arcuate body having end walls, seats carried by the bod arranged adjacent to the end walls, face plates carried by the end walls, pairs of spaced bumpers carried by each of the face plates and arranged in spaced relation to the end walls, the bumpers being gradually enlarged toward their outer ends, and feet formed on the free ends of the bumpers.

6. A rocking device for children compris ing a pair of spaced arcuate side bars, a bot tom wall secured to the side walls, end walls secured to the side bars, seats carried by the side bars and arranged adjacent to the end walls, backs for the seats, depending bumpers carried by the terminals of the device, and pivoted and sliding handles carried by the side walls and arranged in front of each of the seats.
